Spotify Says The Weeknd Sets Historic 5 Billion Stream Milestone

The Weeknd’s hit single Blinding Lights has become the first song ever to surpass 5 billion streams on Spotify, the company announced on August 31, 2025.

The milestone track is one of 28 songs by The Weeknd to join Spotify’s Billions Club, more than any other artist. The Toronto-born star also headlined Spotify’s first-ever Billions Club: Live concert in December.

Spotify shared the news on its official X and Instagram accounts and issued a statement to iPhone in Canada, saying, “Once again, Canadian talent shines as a global cultural force, with chart-topping hits reaching audiences worldwide. We’re proud to champion homegrown artists at Spotify and provide the platform that helps their music travel farther, faster, and louder than ever.”

The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights was released in 2019 as part of his album After Hours. That works out to about 869 million streams per year since the song’s debut.

Last week, Spotify released a new DM feature, while also rolling out new custom playlist transitions last month. The Weeknd continues to stick around in the global top 10 most-streamed artists of 2025 so far on Spotify.
