Apple Introduces iPhone 17 With ProMotion, A19 Chip, and Camera Upgrades

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17, calling it a major step forward in design, performance, and photography. The new lineup features four models, each aimed at different users, with the base iPhone 17 leading the way.
iPhone 17 comes in five colours — lavender, mist blue, black, white, and sage. It features a 6.3-inch display with thinner borders, offering more screen without making the phone bulkier. The display now supports ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, previously reserved for Pro models. It can drop as low as 1Hz for the always-on display, showing live activities and widgets without draining battery.
Apple also boosted outdoor readability with 3,000 nits peak brightness, its brightest iPhone screen yet. The display is reinforced with Ceramic Shield 2, offering three times better scratch resistance thanks to a new Apple-designed coating. A seven-layer anti-reflective layer also reduces glare indoors and outdoors.
Powering iPhone 17 is the new A19 chip, built on 3-nanometer technology. It includes:
- A six-core CPU for faster performance and efficiency
- A five-core GPU for major graphics improvements
- An updated display engine to handle ProMotion and always-on
- A stronger neural engine for Apple Intelligence and on-device AI tasks
Apple says the new chip increases memory bandwidth, improving speed for gaming and running large AI models locally. Titles like Destiny Rising are optimized for the 120Hz ProMotion display.
Battery life is also improved. iPhone 17 offers up to eight more hours of video playback compared to iPhone 16. Charging is faster too — 50% in 20 minutes, or about eight hours of playback from a 10-minute top-up.
Apple has overhauled the iPhone 17’s camera system with a 48MP dual fusion setup:
- A main 48MP camera for detailed shots with 24MP defaults for balance of quality and file size
- An optical-quality 2x telephoto lens
- A new 48MP fusion ultra-wide camera, with four times the resolution of iPhone 16, delivering sharper macros, landscapes, and wide-angle shots
On the front, Apple introduced its biggest update yet: the new center stage front camera. The sensor is nearly twice the size of the previous version, and for the first time, it’s square-shaped. This design allows for flexible framing in any orientation, removing the need to rotate the phone for landscape selfies.
The new front camera also supports four different compositions, with AI automatically expanding the field of view when more people join the frame. It can even rotate the frame automatically, making group selfies easier. Apple says iPhone users worldwide took over 500 billion selfies last year, more than on any other smartphone.
iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, which adds features like visual intelligence (to search and act on what’s on screen), live translation in calls and messages, and enhanced Apple Intelligence tools for on-device AI tasks. Apple emphasizes that all Apple Intelligence features are built with privacy protections.
