iPhone 18 Pro to Feature DSLR-Style Variable Aperture Camera: Report

Apple’s 2026 flagship iPhone lineup could deliver one of the biggest camera upgrades in years. According to a report from the Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, at least one iPhone 18 Pro model will feature a variable aperture main camera — similar to what you’d find on professional DSLR cameras (via MacRumors).
The leaker claims that both the main 48-megapixel Fusion camera and the telephoto lens on the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature larger apertures, allowing more light to enter for improved low-light performance. What sets this upgrade apart is the introduction of a variable-aperture system, which physically adjusts the size of the lens opening depending on the lighting conditions or user preference.
This would mark the first instance of variable aperture control on an iPhone. The feature would give users more creative freedom, allowing them to manually adjust depth of field for sharper subject focus or enhanced background blur — something photographers have long wanted from the iPhone’s camera system. Currently, the main cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro all use a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture.
While variable aperture has been rumoured for several iPhone generations, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported back in November 2024 that it would arrive with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. According to Kuo, Apple’s variable aperture lenses will be supplied primarily by Sunny Optical, with Luxshare contributing as a secondary supplier.
The iPhone 18 lineup itself is shaping up to be quite different from Apple’s usual release schedule. Reports suggest Apple could shake up its launch cycle, unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro models and the company’s first foldable iPhone during the usual launch window in September 2026, but holding the standard iPhone 18 and entry-level iPhone 18e until spring 2027.
Beyond camera improvements, the iPhone 18 Pro is also rumoured to support full 5G satellite internet connectivity — a major leap forward in mobile communication technology. Combined with a DSLR-style camera system, this next-generation device could be Apple’s most ambitious iPhone yet.
If these reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could set a new benchmark for smartphone photography and functionality when it launches next year. What camera improvements would you like to see in the iPhone 18 family? Let us know in the comments below.
