Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Nears Production as Company Stockpiles Parts: Report

Apple is reportedly building up inventory for its long-rumoured foldable iPhone ahead of the device’s anticipated launch next year. According to Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who has a track record of accurate Apple supply chain insights, the company has begun stockpiling key components for the “iPhone Fold” (via MacRumors).
The move reportedly signals that Apple is entering the pre-production phase, with suppliers ramping up manufacturing of critical parts such as foldable OLED panels, titanium frames, and complex hinge assemblies. These components can have high failure rates and long lead times, so early accumulation allows Apple to smooth out its production pipeline and mitigate supply risks. Samsung is expected to supply the foldable OLEDs for this new breed of iPhone, with display production previously expected to ramp up by year’s end.
The foldable iPhone is said to adopt a book-style design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold rather than the clamshell layout of the Z Flip. When folded, the device will feature a 5.5-inch external screen, while unfolding it will reveal a larger 7.8-inch inner display that’s reportedly nearly crease-free. It may also include an under-display front camera, with the outer display using a punch-hole design. Authentication is expected to rely on side button-mounted Touch ID instead of Face ID — a contrast to reports that the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup could debut under-display Face ID.
According to supply chain analyst Jeff Pu, Apple’s foldable frame will combine titanium and aluminum for strength and lightness. Longtime Apple leaker Ming-Chi Kuo has made similar claims, albeit swapping out aluminum for stainless steel and suggesting the hinge mechanism could include Liquidmetal for added durability. Reports have even likened the foldable iPhone to two iPhone Airs joined at the sides, with a thickness of just 4.5mm when unfolded.
Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to join the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026, though some analysts have suggested it may be delayed until 2027 due to hinge design challenges. Earlier reports have hinted that Apple plans to shake up its release schedule for the iPhone 18 series, launching the Pro models and the foldable in September but waiting until spring 2027 to unveil the base iPhone 18 and the new iPhone 18e.
If accurate, Apple’s growing parts stockpile indicates that the company is taking tangible steps toward realizing its first foldable device — a product category that has long been viewed as the next major frontier for the iPhone lineup.
Recent rumours have also hinted that Apple’s first foldable could undercut market expectations on price. What do you think Apple will call the device? The iPhone Flex? The iPhone Air Fold? Or just “iPhone Fold”? Hit us with your best guess in the comments below.
