Google Photos’ New Video Editor Is Shockingly Good—Here’s What’s New

Google Photos is rolling out new tools that make it easier to put together highlight videos from your clips and photos. If you’ve ever tried stitching together a vacation montage and ended up giving up halfway through, this update is for you.
Templates are the biggest addition. On Android, you can pick a preset style with music, text, and timing already handled. Just choose your photos and videos and Google Photos will auto-generate a highlight video synced to the beat. It’s basically Google saying: “Let us do it, you’ve suffered enough.”

A redesigned video editor is also arriving on Android and iOS. It uses a cleaner timeline layout for multi-clip editing, along with an adaptive canvas so you’re not dragging clips around like you’re defusing a bomb. Tools are placed where you’d expect them to be, which is a refreshing change for any editing app.
Google has added a built-in music library too, so you can finally stop scrolling through your phone trying to remember which track fits a birthday party versus a dog montage. On Android, you can also add custom text overlays with expanded font and colour choices.
The new editor is now the default for individual clips on Android. Open any video from your gallery, tap edit, and you’ll get all the upgraded tools, including the option to add music and text to a single clip.
The updates are available now or rolling out, making it easier to create quick highlight videos without leaving Google Photos, or pretending you’ll learn a real video editor someday.
Apple needs to update its Photos app so users can also easily whip out shareable videos, like this update. Maybe when Apple Intelligence arrives one day?
