iOS 26 Brings One-Tap Switching from Android to iPhone
As part of a collaboration triggered by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple and Google have introduced new tools embedded directly into the setup process for latest iOS and Android releases to allow faster data and eSIM transfer (via 9to5Mac).
Under the forthcoming iOS 26, currently in developer beta, Apple will integrate these switching features natively. On the Android side, the tools are already visible in the latest Android Canary 2512 build for Pixel phones.
This marks a departure from the more cumbersome process of using separate apps such as Move to iOS or Android Switch. The new method launches during the initial device setup, which simplifies the transition and avoids the need for third-party tools.
A key part of the upgrade is support for a much wider range of data types than before. Users can expect to migrate contacts, calendars, messages, photos, documents, Wi-Fi networks, passwords and even third-party app data where supported, bringing near-complete portability between platforms. Another major convenience is the addition of seamless eSIM transfer between devices.
With iOS 26, Apple has added a “Transfer to Android” option in cellular settings, which generates a QR code to move your mobile plan from iPhone to Android (or vice versa) without needing carrier support. That simplifies one of the most annoying steps for people switching ecosystems. Meanwhile, Google says cabled transfers between an Android and iPhone now work around 40% faster than before.
The move has drawn praise from regulators under the DMA. The European Commission has highlighted the new cross-OS portability features as a clear win for user choice and competition, arguing it helps avoid data lock-in and encourages innovation.
For users who have hesitated to switch phone platforms because of hassle or fear of losing data, this may finally remove a major barrier. The new tools could make decisions like moving from Android to iPhone or vice versa far less daunting.
