ChatGPT Is About to Get Very Personal With Apple Health

OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Health, a new health-focused experience inside ChatGPT that lets users connect personal health data, including information from Apple Health, to get more personalized answers.

The new feature is designed to help users better understand their health data, prepare for doctor appointments, and track patterns over time. OpenAI says health and wellness questions are already one of the most common uses of ChatGPT, with hundreds of millions of people asking health-related questions every week.

With ChatGPT Health, users can securely link medical records and wellness apps so responses are based on their own data rather than general information. At launch, Apple Health integration allows ChatGPT to access fitness and wellness data such as activity, movement, and sleep patterns. The Apple Health connection requires an iPhone to sync. OpenAI says medical record integrations and some apps are available in the U.S. only.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Health operates as a separate, protected space within the app, with added privacy controls designed specifically for sensitive health information. Conversations in Health are not used to train OpenAI’s models, and health data is isolated from regular ChatGPT chats. If a user starts a health-related conversation elsewhere in the app, ChatGPT may suggest moving it into the Health section for added protection.

In addition to Apple Health, ChatGPT Health supports connections to other wellness and nutrition apps (Function and MyFitnessPal) but some medical record integrations are currently limited to the United States. OpenAI says users must give explicit permission before any app can access health data, and connections can be removed at any time.

The company says ChatGPT Health is meant to support, not replace, medical care. It is not intended to diagnose conditions or provide treatment, but to help users understand trends, summarize lab results, and prepare questions for healthcare providers.

ChatGPT Health is launching first as a limited rollout. Users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans can join a waitlist, with access initially available outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the U.K. OpenAI says it plans to expand availability on the web and iOS in the coming weeks.

Last month, it was reported that ChatGPT might integrate with Apple Health, and now that has come true. No word on when this will expand access to Canada, but Canadians can join the waitlist if interested.
