Apple Releases Surprise iOS 15.8.7 and 16.7.15 Updates for Older iPhones and iPads

Apple has released unexpected software updates for a long list of vintage devices, ensuring that users who haven’t upgraded to the latest hardware stay protected.

The company rolled out iOS 15.8.7 and iOS 16.7.15 today, targeting older iPhone and iPad models that are no longer compatible with iOS 17 or iOS 18.

For those still holding onto an iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, or the original iPhone SE, the iOS 15.8.7 update is now available for download. This also extends to the iPad Air 2 (from 2014!), iPad mini 4, and even the 7th-gen iPod touch from 2019.

Users with slightly newer but still vintage hardware like the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the revolutionary iPhone X can now install iOS 16.7.15. This update is also live for the first-generation iPad Pro models and the fifth-generation iPad. While these updates do not bring new features, they typically include critical security patches and under the hood refinements to keep the operating systems running smoothly.

You can check for these updates by heading to Settings > General > Software Update. Given the age of these devices, keeping them on the latest possible software version is the best way to maintain security and app compatibility.

After Apple released iOS 15.8.6 back in January, the company is already back with another surprise software update for its legacy iPhones. This latest release ensures that even the oldest devices in the lineup continue to receive critical support and maintenance.
