Apple Plans to Open Siri to Rival AI Assistants in iOS 27 Overhaul

Apple is getting ready to make a big change to Siri that could turn the iPhone into more of an AI hub.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to open Siri up to multiple third-party AI assistants instead of relying mainly on its current partnership with OpenAI. Right now, Siri can send certain questions to ChatGPT. But Gurman reports Apple wants to go further by letting other AI services, including ones from companies like Google and Anthropic, plug into Siri as well.

The change is expected to arrive with iOS 27, along with updates to iPadOS and macOS. By then, Google’s Gemini will be helping to power the new AI Siri.

Instead of being locked into one AI chatbot, users would be able to choose which assistant they want Siri to use through new Extensions settings. That means you could pick different AI tools depending on which one you prefer.

The move is part of a broader overhaul of Siri, which has faced criticism for falling away behind in the AI chatbot race (it’s quite sad). Bloomberg notes Apple could also make more money from this setup, since third-party AI subscriptions would likely be offered through the App Store, giving the company a cut of those sales.

Maybe Siri could add multiple AI chatbots and allow it to select the best one, or let users choose, similar to Perplexity.
