Niantic has announced that its AR pet simulator mobile game Peridot is shutting down. Three years after originally launching on iOS and Android, the game will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on May 14, 2026.

“After three incredible years, we, at Niantic Spatial, are winding down the Peridot mobile game,” the Peridot team says in a statement. Starting now, all in-app purchases within the app are disabled. Items that are available in the shop will continue to be available using any remaining in-game currency.

As mentioned, Peridot will be removed from the App Store and Google Play, respectively, next month, with servers officially shutting down on August 31st, 2026. Between that time, players will still be able to log in and enjoy the game as usual, with the exception of spending money on in-game currency.

Within the lengthy statement, Niantic skirts around the reason why Peridot is shutting down. Though it does reference the “enormous investment” required to keep an always-on AR experience in the works. Niantic calls it “one of the most technically demanding things you can build.”

Following the widespread success of Pokémon Go and less popular games like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and Pikmin Bloom, Niantic created Peridot as its own AR franchise. The game originally launched on May 9th, 2023, with players interacting with magical creatures using AR technology to render them in the real world through their phone.

In 2025, Niantic sold most of its gaming portfolio to Scopely for $3.5 billion USD (around $5 billion CAD). The sale included the acquisition of Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloomand Monster Hunter Now. However, Niantic spun off its technology platform into Niantic Spatial Inc., which continued to own and operate Peridot and AR game Ingress Prime.

Despite Peridot‘s closurethe IP will continue to live on. Niantic states that Hello, Dot, a VR-based experience for Meta Quest and Vision Pro, will continue to live on. Peridot Beyond, available on Snap’s Spectacles, is also supported.
