Did You Get a Text? Telus Is Giving Away Free 50GB Data Bonuses

Telus is giving select customers a 50GB high-speed data bonus at no extra charge, according to a text message the company sent out on Tuesday. The bonus is automatically activated and stays on the account as long as the current rate plan remains active.

Some customers say the gesture is welcome, but almost too generous given how much data they already have. One Reddit user who switched two mobile lines and an internet plan from Rogers and Fido to Telus last year said they now have far more data than they can use, especially after picking up a 100GB plan for $35 a month during a holiday promo

Another customer said the bonus brought their total shared data across two lines to 600GB, with 300GB per line, which way more than the average user can consume in a month.

Others received even more. One user said a call to change their plan netted them an additional 75GB bonus on top of the 50GB, all at no cost. Another saw their plan jump from 125GB to 175GB, saying they would never use it all but appreciated the addition.

Not everyone is impressed, though. Several users pointed out that the extra data is largely symbolic for most customers. One said they have 250GB but rarely exceed 10GB in a month, and only stay on a higher-tier plan for the roaming perks.

The free data is usually a way for carriers to keep customers around ahead of future promos from rivals. Usually it works because people won’t leave if they know they have a decent plan after data bonuses.
