Google Maps Can Now Predict Tesla Supercharger Availability Before You Arrive
Tesla just rolled out a new feature that finally answers the one question every EV road tripper actually cares about: will there be a spot open when I get there?
For years, tracking Tesla Superchargers on Google Maps was basically a guessing game. You’d see a pin on the map, but had no idea if the station was even working, let alone how busy it was. Tesla drivers mostly just ignored third-party maps altogether and stuck to the car’s own navigation for trip planning.
That started to change once other automakers began adopting Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug. Once thousands of non-Tesla EVs were going to physically show up at these stations, just showing a pin on a map wasn’t going to cut it anymore. Tesla opened up its API last year so Google Maps could show “Live Availability,” letting any EV driver check how many stalls were open right at that moment.
But live data has an obvious problem. A Supercharger that looks wide open from 50 km away can be completely full by the time you actually pull in.
Tesla’s latest update fixes that. According to an announcement from the Tesla Charging account on June 25, forecasted stall availability is now rolling out globally to EVs with Google Maps built in. Instead of just showing what’s available right now, the feature predicts how many stalls will be open by the time you actually arrive, and drivers can opt in to see those predictions.
It’s a small shift on paper, going from real-time snapshots to actual forecasts, but it brings third-party mapping a lot closer to what Tesla’s own in-car navigation has been doing for years. For EV drivers outside the Tesla ecosystem, it means road trips with charging stops can finally be planned with a lot more confidence.
