Apple is getting ready to refresh the Mac mini for the first time in nearly two years, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, citing unnamed people familiar with the plans.
The new desktop could show up as soon as the coming days, which would put it ahead of the September iPhone event. The people who spoke to Gurman asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public.
What’s not clear yet is which chip it ships with. Gurman says Apple has tested versions running both M5 and M6 silicon. The Mac mini was last updated in October 2024 with a redesign and M4 and M4 Pro chips.
The current Mac mini has turned into a favourite for people running AI models locally, and that surge in interest collided with a memory chip shortage that has made the machine hard to keep in stock.
Gurman reports deliveries have been taking weeks or even months to reach customers, and Tim Cook has said the problem would take a while to sort out. Whether a new model helps the backlog or makes it worse is anyone’s guess.
Cook hands the CEO job to John Ternus on September 1, which means the Mac mini would likely be the last new product to go out the door under his watch. Ternus takes over in time to oversee the expected foldable iPhone and everything else queued up behind it.
As for the rest of the fall, Gurman says invitations for the iPhone launch presentation should go out later this week, with the event likely landing on September 9. That’s where the foldable iPhone and the iPhone 18 Pro line are expected, along with new Apple Watches and AirPods 5. Is your wallet ready for yet what looks to be another tick-tock upgrade cycle from Apple (besides the foldable iPhone, which no doubt will be super expensive).
