Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look footage hit a major milestone following its premiere on Netflix last Thursday. The nearly 27-minute GTA VI: An Extended Look attracted 31.1 million views on the streaming service during its first four days.

While garnering such a strong audience on Netflix, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look became the streaming service’s most-watched title globally for the week, according to Variety. That is particularly notable because Netflix only had the presentation exclusively for six hours. Afterwards, the exact same video was published on Rockstar Games’ official YouTube channel and elsewhere. In comparison, the views of the Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Rockstar Games’ channel are sitting at around 17 million.

Rockstar debuted the Extended Look on Netflix on August 27 at 3 PM ET. The unusual arrangement gave Netflix an early exclusive without preventing Rockstar from eventually putting the footage in front of its much larger gaming audience. The strategy appears to have worked for both companies. Netflix’s 31.1 million views put the GTA VI presentation on full display on its platform for subscribers to watch in the moment or after the fact.

This was the first chance fans got to really see Grand Theft Auto VI’s gameplay. The presentation featured the most substantial look yet at the game’s new protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The footage showcased Vice City and the broader state of Leonida, along with driving, combat, police chases, and the pair’s relationship. Simply put, it was an extraordinary spectacle of fidelity and scale. What was shown during the Extended Look raised the bar and set expectations for what the studio is capable of. The underlying systems at play really demonstrated prowess in open-world game design.

The premiere of the Extended Look is also Rockstar’s answer to the wave of unauthorized footage that circulated online ahead of the presentation. The developer described the leaks as “heartbreaking” and said the official Extended Look had taken longer than expected to prepare.

The massive response should not come as much of a surprise. Take-Two Interactive previously described early GTA 6 pre-orders as “unprecedented” and “astonishing,” although the company has not disclosed actual sales figures.

Now that the presentation is out, the next major date is November 19. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the standard edition priced at $109.99 CAD and the Ultimate Edition at $139.99 CAD in Canada. At this point, the biggest question is no longer whether people are interested in GTA 6. Netflix has 31.1 million reasons to suggest the answer is very much yes.
