Rogers is quietly putting its online shipping fee back up. A notice on the carrier’s website says the current $9 shipping charge on eligible devices will return to $25 on October 5.
The cheaper rate was always temporary. Rogers cut the fee from $25 to $9 in July after the CRTC questioned the charge. A Monday check by iPhone in Canada shows Rogers and Fido now telling customers the lower rate applies only “for a limited time.” In-store pickup remains free.
The exact wording on Rogers’ BYOD cart page reads: “For a limited time, a $9 shipping charge applies or pick up in-store for free on eligible devices. $25 shipping charge will apply as of October 5.”
The notice appears above the plan builder, meaning customers shopping online will see the warning before checkout.
The shipping fee is part of a wider fight between Canada’s biggest carriers and the CRTC over new charges introduced after federal rules targeting switching barriers took effect on June 12.
Rogers is under scrutiny for a $40 device setup fee, $25 shipping charge and a SIM fee. Bell is being questioned over its $40 device handling fee, while Telus is defending a $15 SIM and eSIM charge. The CRTC has already rejected an attempt by Bell, Rogers and Telus to stall the proceeding.
The carriers were given until September 10 to file their final replies, and a decision is still pending.
The dispute has also moved into court. Telus is challenging the CRTC process in Federal Court, while a separate filing obtained by iPhone in Canada revealed that Rogers has filed its own appeal request over the same ruling.
Quebecor and Freedom Mobile have taken a different approach, telling the regulator they have already dropped the disputed fees or do not charge them. Quebecor has argued its rivals should do the same.
For Rogers customers, the immediate impact is simple: having an eligible device shipped after October 5 will cost $16 more than it does today. Customers can avoid the charge by ordering before the deadline or choosing free in-store pickup.
The timing is notable with another major Apple launch coming up. Rogers has already confirmed it will sell the iPhone Duo, with pre-orders opening October 16 and availability starting October 23.
