iPhone Selfie Age Checks Are Live, but Not for Canadians Yet

Apple now lets adults confirm their age with a selfie in a handful of countries, according to an Apple support document covering the feature that shipped with iOS 27.2. Canada is not on the list.

The selfie option is available in Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Those markets already require adults to confirm they are 18 or older before some Apple Account actions.

People may be asked during a new Apple Account setup, a software update, a change to certain safety settings, or when they try to download an 18+ app. The phone walks them through four head angles so an age-estimation model can judge the face.

Analysis runs on the device and on Private Cloud Compute, then the results are combined on the iPhone. Apple says the selfie is not available to anyone, including Apple, and that the image is deleted once the age check finishes.

Other proof methods still exist, including a personal credit card or a government ID scan. Debit cards and gift cards do not count. If a selfie fails, the support note says to try again while online or use one of those other options.

Minors who cannot confirm may need an adult in a Family Sharing group for some downloads and settings. In some places, certain actions stay blocked until they turn 18.

Age rules are already shaping tech policy in Canada, from Google’s AI age checks on under-18 accounts to Ottawa’s push around a social media ban for kids under 16. Australia has also raised platform fines, which keeps pressure on age tools that do not keep a permanent photo on file.

None of that brings the selfie path to Canadian Apple Accounts yet. Would you use a one-time face scan to unlock 18+ apps if Apple offered it here?
