Apple Plans Paid Expanded Access for Heavier Siri AI Cloud Use

Apple used Monday’s earnings call to sketch a paid path for heavier Siri AI use, right after a record $114.5 billion September quarter.

CEO John Ternus said free Siri AI will have limits when the work runs on Apple’s servers instead of on your iPhone. People who need more will be able to buy extra access later.

He tied that paid option to iCloud+, Apple’s paid iCloud storage plan that also includes privacy extras like Private Relay and Hide My Email.

“There are going to be some usage limits on features that rely on server-side models, which include Siri AI and intelligent photo editing, some other things like that, and so anyone who needs greater capacity will be able to purchase expanded access in the future,” Ternus said on the call.

Early iCloud plans were “largely about storage,” he added, but Apple has been “adding more capabilities and features to it.” Cloud services also just set an all-time sales record in the September quarter.

For everyday users, that likely means a free daily or monthly allowance for the smarter Siri AI chats and photo edits that need Apple’s remote computers. Simple requests that stay on the phone could keep working without counting against that limit.

Once you hit the cap, you would pay for more room, probably through iCloud+ or a higher plan. Ternus did not give prices, launch countries, or a date beyond “in the future.”

CFO Kevan Parekh said Siri AI questions will run both on the device and in Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system. The split is still early, and the cost of those remote computers shows up in Apple’s Services expenses as more people start using the assistant.

IIC has followed this rollout from Ternus playing down a Siri race story to new languages in iOS 27.2 and earlier notes on beta access and regional limits. It also fits how iCloud+ keeps adding features beyond raw storage.

Apple did not say whether the extra access will be a meter on every iCloud+ tier, a top-up pack, or a new plan, or how big the free allowance will be. What it did say is that limits are coming for server-based Siri AI and smart photo editing, and that paying for more capacity will be the way out if you bump into them.

Would you pay more on your iCloud+ plan for higher Siri AI and photo-editing limits, or is the free allowance enough for how you use your phone?
