Telegram Messenger Update Brings Audio Messages, Improved Chat Deletion

Last November we told you about Telegram Messenger, which touted itself as the ‘world’s most secure messaging app’, even going so far as to reward $200,000 to the first person to break the app’s encryption.

The messaging app was updated yesterday to add the ability to send audio messages plus improve its secret chat deletion, which will now remove chats from your device and your chatting partner’s device. Also new is the ability for background download for messages plus bug fixes and improvements.

What’s New in Version 2.1
– deleting a secret chat message removes it from both devices (new Telegram apps only: iOS 2.1, 1.4 or higher on other devices)
– audio messages
– background download for messages
– other fixes and improvements

Telegram Messenger describes itself as a faster and more secure version of WhatsApp and you can see the resemblance in the app’s design. With this in mind, it would make sense Telegram would implement its new audio message feature—just like the way you would use it on WhatsApp.

To send an audio message, you just hold down on the new mic icon, speak your message and let go to send it. To cancel your audio message, you just slide to the left—exactly like how you would do so in WhatsApp.

Telegram saw 5 million sign ups in 24 hours back in February after WhatsApp suffered the worst outage in its history, boosting the former into the spotlight.

I have to admit it’s still hard to convert people to Telegram when people are hesitant to switch from Whatsapp or because there is simply too many messaging apps out there =/

Yeah I agree. Very difficult to get someone to download yet another app. But for those who like ‘secret chats’ this is the one to get.

Telegram’s delivery speed is superb so far, maybe due to smaller user base. It’s really the fastest most times. Even secret chats are just as fast. Hope it can scale up easily for increasing user base.
