WSJ: Apple Not Planning iPhone 4 Recall

Earlier today, Apple announced a surprise press meeting for this Friday at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The meeting will be focusing on the iPhone 4 and the first thing everyone thought was that Apple was going to issue a product recall.

While Apple will definitely speak about the iPhone 4 signal issues and recently released iOS 4.0.1, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple will not begin a product recall for the iPhone 4.

Apple’s iPhone 4 has been dogged by reports of antenna-reception problems since its launch last month. The company has called a news conference to discuss the issue Friday. Apple doesn’t plan to recall the phone, a person familar with the matter said.

More interestingly, apparently Apple engineers were aware of the risks associated with the external antenna design of the iPhone 4. The risks were also communicated to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, but “Mr. Jobs liked the design so much that Apple went ahead with its development”.

There is definitely no shortage of iPhone 4 drama these days. The press conference is scheduled for tomorrow and it will be interesting to hear what is discussed.

Any chance they are going to announce the Canadian release date for this phone?

My money is that they will announce it tomorrow for sure.

No recall should be good news on a release date for us and the other 17 countries =)

Absolutely. I have been praying there is no recall because I don't want to wait for Sept.

I think they will announce the release in Canada and other countries tomorrow. I am not sure what the release date will be, as there have been a few batted around, but I am just hoping that they allow pre-orders on the Apple site, as I am planning on getting an unlocked one. Would be nice to have it show up at my door on launch day rather than fighting a line up.

My money (or wishful thinking) is on a confirmed release date for Canada.

My guess is for Preorders starting on the 23rd and release on the 30th.

I held my first Iphone 4 in Buffalo last night … grabbed the phone in my hand bars dropped off immediately ,
today went to Apple Galleria Mall in Buffalo , tried all the display units and no bars dropped … weird ehhhh

Interesting. We've heard rumours that the fix has already been implemented in the manufacturing process. Would make sense for them to replace all the display units with working ones. 🙂

Australian tech site reports: “One of the leading carriers of the iPhone in Australia, where the phone has not been launched, told SmartHouse that Apple Australia will delay the launch untill there is a fix for the problem….”

Australia is on the release schedule as Canada. Any inside info about this for Canada from Ex or Gary?

We've heard nothing yet from the Canadian carriers. I'm sure tomorrow will reveal more.

In your opinion Ex, will it be delayed in Canada?

Canadian release will most likely be on the 23rd of July

Ex

Based on discussions I've had and plans I've seen from both carriers and Apple, evidence suggests no delay.

July 30 seems to be the golden day.

It would make some degree of sense to release on the 23rd, but I would put my money on July 30th, but that's just a guess. I do love it when people just throw something out there without explaining the thought process behind it, and apple geeks are as bad as anyone, if not worse, probably owing to apples ridiculous amount of secrecy.

How surprised would you be if any delay beyond July was announced?

Not at all surprised. We've seen it before.

I had he same experience using iPhone 4s in Chicago and st. Paul, which is partly related to the bars which used to lie. Full bars used to cover way too wide a range, and taking the lower end of that range and subtracting 20 used to be able to take it to one bar, but taking the high end of the old full bar range and subtracting 20 would still leave it at full bars. The question is whether 20dB is as bad as some say and whether that measurement is even true. I'm way surprised at the number of people who've been talking about recall. It is quite a sight to behold, this death grip thing is a minor issue compared to the pluses, and the antenna on the outside probably gives it generally better reception than most when it's not in death grip and that's a pretty smart trade off if it's true, especially if it still gets better than average reception with the bumper and the death grip is handled.

they need to touch on this, but more so release something new to get the whiz bang attention. The rumoured 3D macs should be announced soon.

Ooohhhhh myyyy gooddddd are you really that stupid? Come on? You can't be serious. You people are happy theres no recall because you just want the broken phone!??? The best thing that apple can do FOR THE PUBLIC is to fix the problem. And clearly this is a hardware problem. The announcement should be a postponed delivery to canada and the rest of the world in order to deliver 100% working phones! Not a bandaid fix.. It's really aggravating to see people still just dying to get this phone without even knowing what that outcome of the announcement is. They're already on some Tom-foolery with their signal strength indication system.. What's next? How can you be happy knowing that Steve Jobs may have known about this and is fine? I'm sure theres a lot of people that will base their decision on whether or not to buy their phone (or return it) based on how apple responds to this response (including myself). For some extra entertainment YouTube “whoopie iPhone 4” as she talks about her complications with reception while trying to do a talk show interview over the phone.

You have no idea what he meant… If there is no recall, WE will get the fixed iPhones if they have a fix for it. But if they recall, everyone will get the FIXED iPhones and then they'll be a shortage of iPhones to go around so our release date is postponed. Either way we will get the fixed iPhones if they are planning on fixing it.

If this was widespread, it would be all over the “real” news in every launch country for the iPhone 4. Jason Chen is the “source” of these “recall” rumours.

I asked a friend who works at Robbers and the date that he's hearing is on the 23rd of July. To “???” – what's your point?

Would someone care to explain how these “guesses” and “I think they will..”'s as they pertain to the release date in Canada came about? How are so many of you able to bias one release date to another? Based on the information I've seen, there is no reason to be hopeful for July 23rd, or the 30rd, or any other date. So I'm just curious.

I remember someone somewhere in the comments on this blog said that Apple will announce the release date on the 16th .. that was before Apple announced the press conference .. I'm too lazy to find that comment and press 'like', so I just wrote it here xD

and no i dont think it will be released on the 23rd .. way too little time between announcement and release .. I would bet on a July 30th release

When has ANY Apple product NOT had style over substance?? Meaning, has there ever been an Apple product which has substance over style or even substance and style on par?

The correct answer is no. Though I'm glad you can put 1 and 1 together albeit a little slowly.

Wow you're a real observationalist! KUDOS to YOU! I was talking about a previous post…..not that you would bother to have read it. And the observation that you (and you alone) have noted in your previous reply is mind-boggling. Wow…..shear genius. It's a good thing the rest of us never noticed Apple has always been style over substance. Glad you're here to point out the obvious! Thanks for coming!

Only 10.5 hours to go till we're told to “just don't hold it that way–hold it this way.” 😀

On a side note, let's stop the personal attacks and talk more about the issues.
