Griffin Wave Case, elan Form, and Nu Form iPhone 3G Review

One of the top aftermarket iPhone accessory makers is none other than Griffin Technology. The products that I have seen so far have been top notch in terms of design and quality standards. You might remember my review of the Griffin PowerDock2 iPhone/iPod charger, Streamline Sportband, TuneBuds Earphones, elan Holster (reviewed by X1Zero) and Wave Case (first gen).

This time around we’re going to do a lightning review of Griffin’s new iPhone 3G case solutions, in particular the Wave, elan Form, and Nu Form.

Griffin Wave case (iPhone 3G, 24.99): Extremely similar to its first gen counterpart, the Wave is an interlocking snap-on solution that fits your iPhone 3G in a very snug form. The build is hard plastic that has a rubbery feel, yet it is very strong. I feel that dropping your iPhone within this case will not cause it to come apart. A plastic screen protector and cleaning cloth is included in all of these Griffin cases.

Griffin elan Form (29.99): I was pleasantly surprised to finally get a chance to check out this hard-shell leather case for the iPhone 3G. I actually used the elan Form to protect my second iPhone 3G (remember my battery issues?). The leather back gave lots of grip, but I still found it slippery. The fit of the case was SUPER snug, and the addition of a thin plastic screen protector that just sits on top your iPhone’s screen is a nice change.

Griffin Nu Form (24.99): This case is exactly the same as the elan Form, but it is made of hard plastic throughout instead of a leather back like the elan Form. The cool thing about these “Form” cases is that you can easily remove the bottom half of the case to charge your phone in the dock. However, my concern is how well the “hold” would be on these cases after repeatedly removing the bottom everyday. Another slight concern is that if you have some debris inside your case, it will scratch your iPhone just like how silicone cases will. The Nu Form also came with a plastic screen protector.

All in all, these Griffin cases are great solutions and the one I would buy personally is the elan Form. The leather back does improve the look of the case and also gives some more feel and grip when carrying it in your pocket.

I’ve tried the Wave Case before, which turned out to be real bad. It started my iPhone 3G a bit. And I managed to refund it. Next, I bought the Nu Form Case and it was extremely hard to take off and the bottom had discoloration after leaving the case for one day without much use. (I never took it out before too until the next next day, which I tried to refund it to the Rogers store) Unfortunately, the stupid worker at the chinese store wouldn’t let me refund it and said, “No one will buy it if you refund it because of the bottom having discoloration.” That sentence basically just pissed me off. I don’t think I will ever be buying any of Griffin’s products ever again. Also, based on google searches, I’m not the only one having the discoloration problem and others have said the case has cracked after only a couple days of use. I rather pay double the price for something made by another company. (Like SwitchEasy.)

By the way, the case I won from the Colors Contest is really really good. Best silicone and best case I’ve ever used in my life. Thanks again X1Zero.

Any tips on how to get the elan form to fit properly over the invisible shield? I took the elan form off to put the invisible shield on and now it doesn’t quite fit back on. I really quite like it and would like to have it work a bit better. Thanks.

I have the nuform and it SUCKS big time. Like iPhone Fan mentioned, it WILL scratch the back of your iPhone (it did to mine), even though I try to not remove it and ALWAYS wipe it down thoroughly before re-inserting.

Also, the polycarbonate screen protector is utter garbage. First off, if the slightest bit if moisture gets underneith, it forms these oil-like spots where the screen sticks to the display. And is scratches VERY easily.

I called Griffin and they are sending me a new “stick-on” screen protector, but I decided I’m going to scrap the nu form all together as soon as I get my Best Skins Ever case.

Thanks for your comments John. The exact same thing happened to me. As soon as I put on the screen protector I hated the “spots” on the screen. It totally ruined the iPhone experience. Luckily I was just outside the store (Best Buy) when this was discovered, explained, and returned it no problem.

Otherwise I really like the Griffin case. Did the “stick-on” screen protector work for you? Does it side easily under the nuform back? Thx.

My girlfriend has the wave case. She says the front piece is really uncomfortable when you talk on the phone. She just uses the back piece, and because of its form fitting, stays on firmly. If you buy the wave case, also get a front IS.
