iPhone 3GS: 3.1 Firmware Jailbroken By Dev Team!

We have some awesome new for all you iPhone 3GS users out there. As you may already know, 3.1 firmware for the iPhone 3GS has not been jailbroken yet. This has led to a test of patience for iPhone 3GS users who have resisted updating to 3.1 firmware (and staying on 3.0 or 3.0.1).

3.1 Firmware on the iPhone 3GS Has Been Successfully Jailbroken

You read that correctly folks! 3.1 firmware on the iPhone 3GS has successfully been jailbroken, according to the latest tweet by cpich3g, an official iPhone Dev Team member. He sent out this tweet earlier:

3gs 3.0 pwned->3.1 pwned. Props to Musclenerd, Wizdaz and thanks Bumble-Bee & ToddJG for testing. tinyurl.com/y8sr4p3 tinyurl.com/y8z277l

Further to my last post, the 3gs 3.1 jailbreak does not apply to OTB or non-downgradable 3.1 device.

So that means, if your iPhone 3GS is on 3.1 brand new out of the box, or you already updated to 3.1 firmware, you’re outta luck (and 3rd Gen iPod Touches-thanks RP!). Included in the tweet was the following two screenshots:

35aulj8 2pow5mx

What does this mean? It means updated versions of PwnageTool and redsn0w should be released shortly by the iPhone Dev Team! They usually don’t give ETA’s on release dates, but I have a hunch we can expect to see something come within the next week or earlier!

I’ve been patiently waiting with my iPhone 3GS on 3.0 firmware. Once the jailbreak tool comes for 3.1 on the 3GS I’ll be updating immediately!

Will the jailbreak work if you got an iphone with 3.1 already on it?

Yes. An iPhone 3GS anyway.

CPICH also posted: “Further to my last post, the 3gs 3.1 jailbreak does not apply to OTB or non-downgradable 3.1 device.”. So any3GS already on 3.1 is S.O.L. No support for iPod Touch 3rd gen, either.

Great news. I've been patiently waiting while dreaming of the ability to arrange apps. I was about to give up.

If I remember from some of Musclenerd's tweets that you will still be able to jailbreak it, just not unlock it.

Hopefully it's true for all of those impatient people that upgraded to official 3.1

with all the problems with the 3.1 upgrade. i.e. shorter battery life and random rebootings. is it worth upgrading?

Yah. I do question if I want to upgrade too given all those issues and bugs. 🙁

Sweet, but… I'd personally hold off on the 3.1 upgrade. 3.1 is buggy in it's own right, and a jailbroken 3.1 is crazy buggy. I'm gonna downgrade as soon as I have the time (it's been a busy week). I crash to safe mode multiple times per day, and have experienced several missed calls. The only cool thing is moving icons in iTunes, but there's a jailbreak app for that, plus you'll lose native tethering (although PDAnet still works).

Damn. I'm staying away from 3.1 then. People will jailbroken iphone can already rearrange their stuff anyway so really, nothing good in 3.1, only bad.

I hope they are able to get the new phones jailbroken out of the box, I'd hate to think this will have to be my last iPhone come new hardware, plus my Mom wants to get a 3GS for the camera and skype over 3G. If apple succeeds in blocking jailbreaks on new devices it will cost them business.

Depends… the Dev Team clearly states that it does not work with out-of-the-box 3GS phones at the moment.

Wow, now I'm glad I held off 3.1 upgrade

no jb for iPhones of the future? If that is so then I may have bought my last one. There goes my plan to buy a mac book and start developing too.

maybe I'll justvride out the 3 year contract and see what's out there by then. There could be less restricted smart phones by then or a more permanent opening of the iPhone platform (xmlvm could be mature by then) or even an open source voip app that you could hack to work over 3g (the main reason I jb)
