iPhone 3.0 software update; Due Summer 2009

WOW! WHAT AN UPDATE!

Hey all! Below is a list (with probably a few missed features) of what was announced for the 3.0 software update preview for iPhones and iPod Touches on March 17, 2009. Please note that a few of the features will not work with the original iPhone such as MMS and that the update is due “Summer 2009”.

New iPhone features with the 3.0 Software Update

1. Push notifications for applications (have an instant message app running in the background giving you updates)

2. Turn by turn GPS for future developed Map applications

3. Peer to peer connections. You find another iPhone with Bluetooth and then start a sharing session via WiFi. Watch this video for an idea.

4. Copy, cut, and paste. Shake the iPhone to undo. Double tap to select text and bring up a cut/copy/paste menu and drag your finger along a word to copy

3

5. You can now send multiple photos using Mail (as opposed to only one before) using the copy/paste menu

6. Landscape keyboard now available in Mail, Note, and SMS (This is a BIG one)

1

7. MMS support (pictures are sent in the text message bubble but just without the text) (You can now send photos, contacts, audio files, or your location via Maps) (This is HUGE)

8. You can forward or delete individual SMS messages now (like each individual bubble). (Take THAT Crap-Berry)

9. You can make Voice recordings and they can be trimmed within the iPhone and sent via MMS or email

10. Landscape view in Stocks with additional statistical information such as Highs or Lows so that now everyone can watch and understand what “Depression” means! 🙂

11. You can now Search for content within the device. Search for Contacts, Music, Calendar events, Notes, or Mail. (Blackberry users will be familiar with this in their Music application)

12. Spotlight (a Mac program) is now installed on the iPhone. You can search for applications now instead of swiping your finger to get to additional home screens (the option is at the bottom of the home screen)

2

13. Notes Sync

14. Audio/video tags

15. Live streaming

16. Shake to shuffle (Shaking the iPhone while in iPod activates the shuffle mode. Not sure how this will fare with workouts and joggers…)

17. Wi-Fi auto login (Next time you’re at Starbucks, your iPhone will automatically log you in)

18. Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP support) (This is HUGE)

19. Maps inside other applications. So now new applications will be able to use the Maps application that everyone knows and loves

20. iTunes account creation

21. YouTube ratings

22. Anti-Phishing (Great for security when browsing in Safari)

23. You can now use your iPhone to control accessories, for example, using your iPhone to equalize sound when connected to a loudspeaker or stereo dock.

4

24. VPN on demand

25. From apps downloaded from the AppStore, you can now use Micro-transactions to purchase content within downloaded apps (new clothing in Sims 3 for example or buy additional magazine subscriptions.)

26. YouTube subscriptions

27. YouTube accounts and Encrypted profiles.

28. Auto-fills (meh.)

29. Rumble. Now apps that requires a rumble feature (mostly for video games) can rumble and improve the user experience!

30. Tethering support built-in

31. General performance upgrades to address laggyness and etc

As I said earlier, the update will be available in Summer 2009 and free for all iPhone users.

List any features I missed below in the comments!!!!!

w-o-w. must say say I am impressed with the new features. Although most of these should have come standard with the 3G release, nevertheless they are welcomed.

Wondering how some of these will fair on my batterry tho.

Sweet! Can’t wait for many of these, especially landscape view for mail and the ability to send multiple images finally. Couldn’t care less about MMS really, and it looks like I’ll need to upgrade my data plan.

Now I’m hungry for some wings.

To be honest, a lot of this isn’t “new” by any means. A lot of these features are Apple playing catchup with an OS that has really been hobbled unless you jailbroke it. I am glad to see a lot of it as it’s going to make the phone a heck of a lot more useful.

I also agree this is going to sap the battery a lot more now… may start looking for a plugin battery after 3.0 is installed.

I also wonder how much the OS has changed in relation to the time it will take the iPhone Dev team to jailbreak it? 🙂

Whoa! Thats nice… They’re finally coming out with much more necessary updates.
I saw it coming. Apple wouldn’t never give his updates too early because of the market. They want us to keep on waiting for the updates because they know there is a lot stuff that the Iphone cannot do compared to the other phones. I Can’t wait to see that!

Will have to wait for it to be jailbroken and unlock, so can’t use 3.0 say Fall this year? 🙂

Amazing… sounds like ‘almost’ everything I jailbroke my phone for will now be standard issue!! But battery consumption will remain a concern.

As they add more bells and whistles, the OS may be slowed by the hardware… it’ll be time to upgrade to the 32GB iPhone soon after, I’m sure!

Yeah, I was hoping they would sneak in hardware preview, as well. The next iPhone will have to have a much better battery to handle all this.

Well the GPS is a good idea, so to speak.

Likely it will run off data, maybe a 20 MEG install. So with that, you will only have a map where you have data. 3G only, likely. Edge would be too slow to send voice commands and street names. A typical Garmin or TomTom has 2 Gig’s of mapping and voice. I don’t see apple adding 2Gig Apps anytime soon.

Also, the GPS in tall building areas where you will have 3G, will likely not be strong enough or accurate.

I hope for more on this feature, since I travel to the US quite a bit, but work won’t cover the international 3G roaming.

Why no mention of video recording ???

Some good features, although I am pretty disappointed that they didn’t add video recording support or flash:(

Can a jailbroken iphone 3g be upgraded with these features?

X1Zero
Reply to  Sam

Yes it can, I’ve done mine. Backup your iPhone 3G first then upgrade.
However, if you are not a developer (you want the 3.0 update now), I recommend not updating because once you update, it is very difficult to go back to an older firmware. Also, you will lose your unlock or jailbreak.

Moreover, if you update and are NOT a developer, you may not get access right away to new firmware updates if the current beta build expires and requires a new one.

However, if you wait until the official release, you will have no problems updating.

We have a post coming tomorrow about this.

Those of you who own the iPhone and continue to complain about it amaze me. Didn’t you do your research before you bought the phone? Because if you didn’t, you are silly and deserve to be disappointed, and you should know by now that when it comes to products there is no such thing as “best”. It is only relative to what suits your needs.

I researched the phone before buying it and accepted its downfalls because for me it’s still the most amazing phone ever. I didn’t expect Apple to change anything because they never, ever say anything about what they are going to do until it is already developed, they do not talk about future technology or software until they have a working product in their hands. This ensures they don’t make false promises, so you iPhone owners who only complain, shame on you for expecting too much and not properly researching.

Sad to say but most of those features will only work on the 3G iPhone. another slap in the face for all of us who paid the high price for the first gen. iphone

Great post. Don’t forget that instant messaging will be sorted so you can be ‘offline’ and still get told you have a message. Saves on battery, bandwidth and screen use. Hey and another thing…. Yeah, go the ‘crapberry’ comment… Doesn’t anyone have a sense of humour anymore? I had a good chuckle. God bless; from down under in New Zealand (we love Canadians)

With the wide range of colours available in blind date uncensored metal blinds they can be used effectively to compliment or contrast a kitchen’s design style. From a safety point of view fabric curtains are not practical for use in a kitchen.
