Ted Rogers Confirms iPhone Release in Canada!

The day has finally come for Canadians (this is not an April Fools joke)! Ted Rogers this morning issued a press release that confirmed the iPhone is coming in Canada! The company has finally come to terms with the big Apple. Here is the quote from Mr. Rogers himself:

“We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year,” said president Ted Rogers in a statement. “We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.”

There were no further details on pricing or availability. Considering there are already thousands of unlocked iPhones already on the Rogers wireless network, this news may not be as exciting to some of you out there. Could the “everybody and their grandma has a Motorola Razr effect” be coming soon?

It’s about time we heard something from Rogers. Both companies haven’t been very open about the release of the iPhone. Most people have assumed it was regarding pricing issues and data plans (Rogers is not a fan of unlimited data plans while Steve Jobs is) and the “iPhone” trademark dispute with Canadian company Comcave.

I’m surprised it took this long, maybe the Great Canadian iPhone Petition might have played a part. A big thanks to all my readers for contacting me with the breaking news–I’m going to blame it on the time zones! Cheers!

This is great news. But knowing Rogers history of outrageous data plans, I wonder what they will do for the iPhone?

Yep. Murphy’s Law. I just bought my damn iPhone in the states a few weeks ago. Now I have to sell it to make sure I don’t lose money on it before the 3G comes in.

Damned Ted Rogers and that company’s feet dragging and non-transparency with their clients. Grrr.

Yeahhhh! Finally. Better be 3G with unlimited data. I doubt fido will get it so I will be switching.

This is great news for everyone! Let’s hope the prices/plans are reasonable!

I am pretty sure we won’t get unlimited data, but you never know!

1. the 3G will not be ‘locked’ but Rogers (and Fido) have the only networks that will support full functionality. For this Apple recieves a (reduced) per customer dividend.

2. expensive either A) no contract or B) for reduced price Ted eats your breakfast lunch and dinenr with $100 data plan (all in) – iPhone enabler is per month charge (visual voice mail+ unlimited data for iPhone device)

3. 3G is not everywhere at all, good luck on the Go-Train commute…

yea, itll be $80-100++/month for ‘iphone plans’ that will most likley ne emei filtered, and they will actually enforce it now (hence hte starting it the other month to get it in place..) Nor will it have ‘unlimited’ data, it’ll have some softcap im guessing.. but still locked to rogers/fido(if they get it) im sure. if it wasn’t you’d end up with a ton of factory unlocked devices on ebay, fast im sure which apple doesn’t want..

im guessing 450~ 2yr, 350~ 3yr plan if ted plays nice. Maybe well get lucky since ATT is going ot be slashing it to 200 w./ a 2yr apparently…

oh, and im sure they wont allow non-rogers phones on the plan either. so guess im selling my phone (if they have a decent pacakge price that is)

Guys don’t be so happy, cuz I heard it on radio that the new iPhone (3G) will not be functional with Rogers… That’s why Ted Rogers said that he wont say anything more cuz Rogers has to either upgrade the entire Rogers Network to support 3G or introduce the ones we have right now with EDGE only…

Anyways I heard from a guy on CBC radio who work in TSX and knew a lot about this kind of stuff…

DAMN….
