Apple on Roe v. Wade Ruling: ‘We Support Our Employees’ Rights’ to Decisions on Reproductive Healthcare

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v Wade, a landmark decision rendered by the court in 1973 establishing that pregnant women have a constitutional right to have an abortion.

Nine states have banned abortion as of Saturday, with a total of 26 states expected to put prohibitions and restrictions in place as soon as practically possible. The Friday decision has created a new abortion landscape in the U.S. and will affect millions of Americans.

Debate on abortion rights has once again split the U.S. in two. Individuals and corporations are making their stance on the matter known, with Apple being one of them (via @markgurman).

“We support our employees’ rights to make their own decisions regarding their reproductive health,” Apple said on the issue. “For more than a decade, Apple’s comprehensive benefits have allowed our employees to travel out-of-state for medical care if it is unavailable in their home state.”

Apple has historically offered support to its employees in more than just their careers. The Cupertino, California-based company has made efforts to promote racial equity and social justice, help employees donate to charities, and even fund skill development for suppliers’ employees, among other things.

However, Apple is currently facing an uprising of sorts of its own. Apple employees in several states, including New York and Kentucky, are conducting union drives. Last week, an Apple store in Maryland became the first of the tech giant’s U.S. locations to unionize.
