Apple has just announced the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The iPhone 12 Pro features a 6.1” Super Retina XDR displays, while the 12 Pro Max features a 6.7” display, with both phones retaining the same size, pretty much says Apple. While supporting 5G, these new iPhone 12 Pro models won’t support mmWave 5G in Canada.
These new phones have stainless steel sides, while there are four new colours, include new Pacific Blue and Graphite.
There’s now also 5x optical zoom for the camera system on iPhone 12 Pro Max, which gets a 47% larger sensor, with an 87% improvement in low light images.
A new optical image stabilization (OIS) feature now brings stabilization to the sensor. The OIS on all wide cameras can make 5,000 micro adjustments per second, a 5x increase versus last year.
iPhone 12 Pro gets a new seven-element lens Wide camera with a fast ƒ/1.6 aperture and 27 percent improved low-light performance in photo and video. The Ultra Wide camera has a 120-degree field of view. The 52 mm focal length Telephoto camera takes optical zoom range to 4x.
iPhone 12 Pro Max has some camera advantages over the regular iPhone 12 Pro. The new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera brings a 47 percent larger sensor with 1.7μm pixels for an 87 percent improvement in low-light conditions. The Ultra Wide camera brings a 65 mm focal length, while when combined with the Telephoto camera, you get 5x optical zoom.
Apple will also bring ProRAW to iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, for images in RAW format, which can be edited in Photos. An API will be coming for Apple ProRAW.
Apple ProRAW will be available in a future iOS 14 update for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
HDR video recording now makes it to iPhone with 10-bit HDR, recording 700 million colours, a 60x increase compared to before. Dolby Vision HDR in 4K and at 60fps is also now possible thanks to A14 which processes frames in real-time.
iPhone 12 Pro will let you edit in Dolby Vision right from the Photos app. This is the only smartphone to support this.
Apple also announced LiDAR to iPhone 12 Pro for augmented reality.
iPhone 12 Pro also has Ceramic Shield for a stronger front glass, MagSafe, and also includes the ultra wideband U1 chip. iPhone 12 Pro has an IP68 rating to withstand water submersion up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, protected against everyday spills, including coffee and soda, says Apple.
“This is a huge leap for iPhone, bringing the best 5G experience in the market and delivering our most advanced technologies to users who want the absolute most from their iPhone,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a statement.
“Each generation of iPhone has changed what we expect from a smartphone, and now with 5G, iPhone 12 Pro provides a new generation of performance. Our tight integration of hardware and software enables incredible computational photography features like the expansion of Night mode to more cameras, and introduces support for HDR video with Dolby Vision. A state-of-the-art LiDAR Scanner means users can experience AR like never before, and also offers benefits to the camera with faster autofocus in low light and the introduction of Night mode portraits. These experiences and so much more make this the best iPhone lineup ever.”
