Apple’s Find My App Now Supports AirPods; AirPods Pro/Max Now Easier to Find

Apple released a new firmware update for AirPods Pro and AirPods yesterday, version 4A400 that brings new features in the Find My app to find your lost earphones and headphones (via MacRumors).

The update also adds Find My app support to regular AirPods for the first time, albeit in limited form, according to an updated Apple support document.

Previously, you would only be able to view the location of your AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, plus play a sound to locate them in the Find My app.

But now, the Find My network can be leveraged to find your lost AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. That means when your earphones or headphones come into Bluetooth range of another Apple device, you can get notified of where they are.

Essentially you’re getting some AirTag-like functionality for your pricey AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

Here are the Find My app features available to each product below:

AirPods Pro, AirPods Max

• Find Nearby
• Play a Sound
• Lost Mode (Mark as Lost)
• Notify When Found
• Notify When Left Behind

AirPods, Beats products

• View Location
• Play a Sound

As you can see, regular AirPods and Beats products now gain the basic functionality that previously was only available on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max: view location and play a sound. Now let’s pray your AirPods have battery life still to play a sound.

There’s no way to install the firmware update yourself. Just ensure your AirPods are in the case and connected to power; pairing them to an iPhone or iPad next should bring an update over time.

To check your AirPods or AirPods Pro/Max firmware, first connect them to your iPhone, then go to Settings > General > About > AirPods. Your firmware version should read 4A400 if Apple has force updated them over-the-air.
