New “Hole + Pill Design” Rumoured to Replace the Notch in iPhone 14 Pro

Contrary to earlier reports and rumours suggesting Apple would introduce a hole-punch design to house the FaceTime camera in iPhone 14 series, Apple analyst Ross Young has now claimed that Apple will instead use a “hole + pill design” to replace the notch (via 9to5Mac).

Young is an analyst for Display Supply Chain Consultants and similar to Ming-Chi Kuo, his reports are usually reliable and are based on indications from the supply chain. He was also the only analyst to report that the 2021 MacBook Pros would feature mini-LED ProMotion displays.

The new “hole + pill design” will be unique to Apple, much like the current notch, notes Young. He continued that Apple chose this design since a simple hole-punch design would have been very similar to the designs used by Samsung and other Android manufacturers.

“We now believe Apple will have a hole + pill design on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The smaller hole will not be invisible…The two hole concept will be unique to Apple, like the notch, not similar to all the pill models from Huawei.”

This design was first shared in a leaked schematic last September. Young is now corroborating that this is the design Apple will use for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to the leaked schematic, the camera will be located on the right, whereas the Face ID system will be located on the left-hand side.
