LG Said to Be Developing Three New Apple External Displays: Report

LG is reportedly working on three new displays for Apple, including a new 32-inch Pro Display XDR and two standalone external displays — one based on the current 24-inch M1 iMac and another modelled after the upcoming 27-inch iMac (via MacRumors).

The tip comes from proven Apple leaker Dylan (@dylandkt), who shared details in a series of recent tweets.

Dylan has come across three LG-made displays, encased in unbranded enclosures, that are all designed to be used as external monitors. Two of these have the same dimensions as Apple’s 24″ M1 iMac and the refreshed 27″ iMac that has been rumoured for a spring 2022 launch.

According to the tipster, the 32″ Pro Display XDR appears to be a successor to the studio-quality external monitor of the same name from 2019, with a custom Apple chip under the hood. This could very well be the A13-powered high-end display Apple was reportedly testing earlier this year. There was no mention of Apple silicon for the smaller displays.

Dylan also noted that both the 32″ and 27″ displays have a Mini-LED panel with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (or what Apple likes to call ‘ProMotion’).

Reports from early this year sang songs of Apple working on lower-end, consumer-level external displays, and the leaked 24-incher and 27-incher certainly fit the bill. These could very well be the first Apple-branded consumer-level monitors we see after Apple discontinued the Thunderbolt Display in 2016.
