There’s a new top dog in the smartphone camera world.
According to DxOMark, the new Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is now the best overall smartphone camera system for still photography. Its overall score for photos and video is matched by the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Huawei P20 Pro, but the Galaxy S10 Plus selfie cam blows those devices out of the water, making it the best full package choice.
While at this point it’s mostly a tie between the phones, but the dual-lensed selfie cam on the front of the Galaxy S10 Plus sends it into the leading spot with a score of 96, much higher than the Mate 20 Pro (75) and the P20 Pro (72).
Citing “good target exposure on faces in most conditions” and “pleasant skin tones, white balance, and color rendering”, the review also praises the selfie camera’s “detail in bright light at all shooting distances”.
Of course, not everything scored so highly – DxOMark notes that the camera’s narrow depth of field can result in “soft faces in group portraits and too soft background details” and that its selfies also exhibit “dull colors in low light”.
The Galaxy S10+ rear cameras were found to capture excellent colour and exposure in bright light, and the triple camera setup helps take enough detail in both the shadow and highlight areas. The camera is also claimed to capture a noticeably wider tonal range over its competitors. However, in low light and indoor shots, the colour production is perceived to become a bit dull, and this brings some reduction on the part of detailing objects in a particular frame.
“The Galaxy S10 Plus is our latest top device for front-camera performance and is an easy recommendation for selfie photographers and video shooters alike. The Samsung’s front camera performs well in all areas and doesn’t display any real weaknesses when compared to the direct competition,” DXOMark concludes.
“In stills mode, some highlight clipping can occur in high-contrast scenes, and colors can look a little dull in low light, but otherwise the S10 Plus does very well in almost any shooting situation.”
The S10 Plus and its smaller siblings will be available in Canada on March 8, with pre-orders having started on February 21.
