Twitter Moments Launches in Canada on Mobile and the Web

Last month we told you Twitter was testing ‘Moments’ in Canada, with a launch set for April. Well, as of this morning, Twitter Moments has launched in Canada. Moments essentially brings you what’s trending and interesting on Twitter, accessible quickly via its own tab within the company’s iOS app, represented by a lightning bolt icon.

Today’s launch brings Moments to Canadians on mobile and desktop, with the team lead by Jennifer Wilson, a former senior editor (social media) from the Toronto Star. Twitter tells us their Moments team consists of veteran Canadian journalists from media outlets such as the CBC, Globe and Mail, National Post and Rogers Sportsnet.

You can keep tabs of Canadian Moments by following the new account @CanadaMoments, while Moments will also be shared from @TwitterCanada and @TwitterSportsCA.

Part of Moments also means it’s another way for advertisers to reach Twitter’s vast audience. The first ‘promoted’ Moment will take place tomorrow from Rogers, with a series of tweets previewing the upcoming NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs (which has zero Canadian teams in the running).

Moments allow users to engage stories by swiping right after clicking a Moment, where they will be presented with relevant information in regards to that story. You can double tap to like a tweet within a Moment, while you can swipe up or down to return to the guide.

An option to follow a Moment will appear, if the event is something that has frequent updates, whether it’s a break news story, sports event, awards show, etc. Updates will then be seamlessly blended into your timeline, so there will be no need to tap the Moments tab to see updates. Once the particular event ends, tweets do as well.
