Freedom Mobile to Charge New $20 Connection Fee Starting June 8
Freedom Mobile currently offers free in-store activations and upgrades, but that is changing as of Monday, June 8, 2020.
According to documents seen by iPhone in Canada, Freedom Mobile says a new $20 Connection Fee will apply for in-store hardware upgrades. For upgrades done online—the fee will be $0, similar to what other wireless companies offer.
But wait—Freedom Mobile says on their June 8 launch day, a special waive offer will be available, meaning those visiting locations that day won’t have to pay the $20 fee, which includes a SIM card.
Shaw’s Freedom Mobile says charging a connection fee will allow it to “invest in further network improvements” and “explore transformative technology.”

Here are details on the new connection fees starting June 8 on Freedom Mobile:
- Postpaid account activation: $20 (on first bill)
- Prepaid account activation: $10 (with first prepaid top up)
- Hardware upgrade: $20
- Online activation or upgrade: $0
Freedom Mobile says all of their wireless competitors charge $40 connection fees and emphasizes in its document this is “twice” of what Shaw charges, at $20.
