How to Speed Up iPhone 3G Syncing in iTunes
Many people have had this issue with syncing their iPhone 3G’s–long sync times. What gives? Well it turns out the delay has been linked to the iPhone’s sending of diagnostic data back to Apple. The following procedure does not remove the backup process itself, so your precious iPhone data will still be there. I just tried out the following steps myself and it worked flawlessly! So I thought it would be of interest to you guys as well, for those who have not read about this yet.
How to Speed Up iPhone 3G Syncing in iTunes
- Connect your iPhone 3G to your computer.
- Once connected, uncheck the “Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected” box under Options.
- Unplug iPhone and plug back in. Right click on the iPhone in the left menu, and choose ‘Reset Warnings’.
- Click sync in the bottom right hand corner–this will incur a pop up window. Untick the “Do not ask me again” box and then click on Don’t Send. That’s it!

- Re-tick the box in Step 2 for “Automatically sync…”
After I followed these steps my iPhone sync time was literally cut down by more than half–it definitely sped things up. Prior to this, syncing a few songs and such would take FOREVER…to the point where I’d want to smash my iPhone 3G (well not really). Give this a try if you’re having some issues with long sync times and let me know if it worked or not!
Big thanks to Lightbrazer from HoFo and GearDiary for the pic!
Side note: my replacement iPhone will be arriving today via UPS…stay tuned as I will give you the updated results on my iPhone 3G battery issues.

Hey I agree with Mystique 100%. Thanks for everything iPhone Fan, without you I never would have had the confidence to buy my first iPhone and unlock it nor would I have been able to enable all the great features and make my own ringtones. This is by far one of the best websites I have ever come across and I just want to take a moment to thank you for pioneering it. Long live iphoneincanada.ca !!!
thanks for the tip…i was just complaining about how slow it is compared to my first gen iPhone
didn’t work for me…..
but I do get the spinnnig ball of boardom for 1.5 minutes every time I plug in…
Thanks iPhone Fan! I think Mystique’s feelings reflect many of us 😀
I’m trying to build up the nerve to update my 1st Gen iPhone to 2.0… waiting to hear some success stories. Don’t know if I’ll ever feel comfortable jail-breaking 3G… it aint broke, so I don’t see the need to fix it. I do however, miss the ability to customize the springboard!
Thanks again. Cheers!
not sure if this will help but… today iTunes 7.7.1 was released via Software Update
“iTunes 7.7.1 includes fixes to improve stability and performance”
my iPod Touch w/ 2.0 firmware would beachball iTunes 7.7 for 4 or 5 minutes when connected, before appearing in the devices list of iTunes and finally allowing me to sync.
but after updating to iTunes 7.7.1 everything works like normal again – it connects with a few seconds. perhaps those of you with problems syncing with iPhone 3G might try the update
Thanks for the top iPhoneFan! 😉
I meant to say *tip* lol
It’s still taking a year to do the ‘backup’

You know what, I was in the same boat as you. I loved my customized themes, but the lag was getting to the point where I would just get frustrated. Now, without WB the phone is actually pretty quick when moving from app to app. Let's hope for an update to WB or a new firmware soon.
