How to: iPhone Speedtest – 3G vs EDGE vs WiFi

When I first tasted the speeds of 3G wireless data my mouth salivated like Pavlov’s dog. After playing around with an iPhone 3G test unit at the Rogers dealer inside Tillicum Mall in Victoria, I was impressed with how quickly Safari was loading web pages. Waiting at red lights in the car has become even more enjoyable than ever before. Sometimes I wish they’d never turn green (note to self: replying to emails/twittering/chatting while driving=dangerous and stupid)!

When Apple first announced the iPhone 3G they claimed that 3G was approximately 2.4x faster than EDGE. I decided to put 3G vs EDGE to the test, and while at it throw in WiFi as a comparison too. I used DSL Report’s iPhone Speedtest for this tiny experiment (read here for top 5 iPhone tips for newbies).

iPhone 3G Speedtest: 3G vs EDGE vs WiFi

Loaded up the speedtest webpage using 3G, EDGE, and WiFi. Here are the results:

The included statistics help compare your speeds versus others who have also completed the speed test. Looks like 3G on Rogers is above the Speedtest all-time average.

3G: 839kbps
EDGE: 145kbps
WiFi: 2758kbps

As you can see from my results, the iPhone at 3G speeds is roughly 5.7x faster than EDGE on the Rogers network, well above Apple’s promise of 2.4x faster. 3G is about 1/3 the speed of my WiFi network at home. Definitely give the speedtest a try and see how your speeds are. Anyone else getting faster speeds than the ones I’ve experienced? Let’s hear your speeds folks!

@LoWd0WnNo:
As far as I know EDGE has a theoretical maximum speed of around 474 kbit/s, so your result seems highly improbable. Are you sure it’s not supposed to be 191 kbit/s or something like that? 🙂

I checked again and it is kbps and this time it was 1001 kbps. Unless I am doing something different. Went to the site – hit edge and that is my result.

LOL. It would have been a good idea had I turned off my wifi connection first. 🙂
Now only 95 kbps, lol

Location: Ottawa South
Network: Fido

Speeds:(Highest, Lowest)

3G: 1633 Kbps, 625 Kbps
EDGE: 97 Kbps, 77 Kbps
Wifi: Not yet tested, I’m at work!

All I can say from these results is….WOW…I’m glad I bought an iPhone 3G instead of a 1st Gen off Ebay.

Definitely loving 3G speeds, even though it eats the battery up. EDGE is slow as crap, but it’s better than nothing sometimes!

Wow I’m getting:

GRPS: 2683kbps
EDGE: 2560kbps
3G: 2344kbps
wifi:2357kbps

That can’t be right can it? My 3g is lower than everything. This is in Surrey, BC on Fido btw.

Ok nvm, I didn’t know you had to change your connection settings every test. Here’s some more realistic numbers lol:

GPRS: not sure how to change to this
EDGE: 141kbps
3G: 1632kbps
WIFI: 3152kbps

So my EDGE sucks. Would be great if they could make it an app that changes connections by itself.

wow those speed differences are amazing. when i heard it was 2.4x faster i just thought alright but thats nothing special and i was debating wether to sign my life away for just double speed because i don’ use gps either or get a first Gen. iphone! but never mind i think I’m going to get the iphone 3G if tis going to be that much faster and get the 6GB data plan it’ll be great:D

@ Andrew, Also make sure you have 3G in your area. I did not know that 3G was not everywhere Rogers has service. I only found out after I got the iphone 3G that only major citys have the service. In saying that, I would still have bought my iphone, it just would have been nice to know. Cheers!

OK. I didn’t realize that turning Airplane Mode On for 10 seconds and then turning it off resets the iPhone. I got 3G back after doings that. Rogers actually helped.

Speeds have plummeted big time on Rogers 3G since the launch of the iPhone (due to congestion). Speeds don’t live up to the 3G speeds Rogers claims.

While at home, on Wifi, I am able to get 9403 kilobits/sec, my PC gets 21,000 kilobits/sec. Not sure why there is such a huge variance. On 3G, we’re lucky to get 800 kilobits/sec or 100 kilobytes.

While in Vancouver, Coquitlam to be exact, I didn't find 3G faster for things like loading Tweetie tweets and the app store and things like that. The only thing I noticed was that the battery died faster. I don't live there, so it's not a huge deal. Maybe I expected too much and therefore didn't see the speed…lol
