How to Take a Screenshot on iPhone 3G

Do you ever reminisce back to the days of jailbreaking and 3rd party applications on the first gen iPhone? Whenever I wrote reviews of applications or the top iPhone optimized websites I had to take screenshots. The first program I used was ScreenShot, but then Capture ended up becoming the screenshot program of choice.

What about taking screenshots on iPhone firmware 2.0? Are there programs in the iPhone App Store? Well, forget everything because there is a screenshot taking utility built into firmware 2.0. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s not documented and when I found out about it today, I just had to come back here and tell you all about it! If you already know about this, move on outta here. If you’re getting excited, keep on reading.

How to Take a Screenshot on iPhone 3G

1. Hold down HOME button, then quickly press the SLEEP/WAKE button on the top right of the phone. You’ll see a quick white “flash” that will fade in and out. This confirms the screenshot was taken.

2. Go to your Camera Roll and VOILA! Your screenshot will be there. Email away to your jealous friends–enjoy! Here’s a screenshot of my current homescreen:

Will it Blend: iPhone 3G Edition

These guys at BlendTec have mastered the art of the viral YouTube video by blending anything they can get their hands on (think: hammers, hockey pucks, magnets, young children, animals, etc). Well, I expected they would follow through with their iPhone 3G edition and they sure did. Check out the video below and get ready to GASP:

In case you missed it, here’s the original Will it Blend video featuring our beloved first generation iPhone:

iPhone 3G update: Going to test my iPhone today with a full battery charge and see how far I can get with it. Also, will watch a few YouTube videos (maybe a lot) to see how much data I’ll really go through. With the 6GB monthly plan, we can allocate 200MB/day. That’s a lot of data! I’ll let you know my results.

For those who have managed to shag an iPhone 3G, what are your impressions so far?

I don’t suppose that works on the Touch, since there’s no ‘camera roll’?

I managed to snag a 16 Gig model on release day…was annoyed that i could not activate it until later in the evening…but i friggen LOVE the phone!!!! I got it because i can carry only one device…before i would take a dayplanner, my cell phone, and ipod with me…now i just carry the iphone. I kept my voice plan without adding data as truly do not need to surf for porn or check my email randomly while walking on the street…the gps would be nice but i can still load maps and i have a good sense of direction!!! Kept my My5 Canada wide plan, 6pm early evenings, 250 daytime minutes, 125 sent and unlimited received text, plus rogers puts a $10 credit EVERY month onto my bill because i am a good customer!! all the people that bitch about how much the phone costs….i got it by upgrading and renewing my plan for 3 years…i LOVE my phone plan as i pay $40 after tax for all of it…and the iphone cost me 350 bucks…sorry about my rant but…like the LeaveBritneyAlone guy…i am saying…LEAVE ROGERS ALONE! hahaha

Not too impressed with battery life on the my new 3G. Two hours of surfing with 3g and some phone calls= Dead battery. I guess 3G sucks the life out of the battery real quick! GPS has some trouble working working down town. I installed some apps then sync with itunes and now when I press an app icon, it just goes back to my home screen. Other than that, best device ever!
Anybody know if that invisable shield by Zagg works?

George: read my review of the invisibleshield! It’s under the Accessories tab up top. I’ve the IS on my first gen and it has protected that baby of mine since day 1.

The InvisibleShield is pretty useless though until they ship them!
My iPhone cant wait much longer..
I ordered mine over a month ago.. and just received an email saying they MIGHT ship by the 25th

I called Rogers about questions of plans and found out that if you subscribe to a voice plan that is $30 or more, you get a $50 discount on the iphone. Eg: 16GB $249.99 8GB $149.99. Sweet

Anyone know if any existing screen protector that’s made for the 1st gen iPhone works on the 3G too?

Tommy

@Greg & George – After reading the reviews of InvisibleShield and BestSkinEver, from this site, I ordered 2 BSE shields yesterday. It costs a lot less (5$ vs. 25$) than InvisibleShield and it seems to use the same material. The shipping seems to be very fast too, but I will see if it’s true in the next few days.

@iPhoneFan – Why do you largely promote InvisibleShield and not BSE, even if your reviews are very similar and your conclusion is that both products are very good, but BSE costs a lot less than the other one? Thx.

Works fine on Touch with 2.0.

I believe iPhone Fan has a promotional deal with IS. IS offers a great product (with a nice lifetime warranty), but personally, I’d rather save the cash and go with BSE.

I ordered my BestSkinsEver skin on Friday, and it shipped first thing monday morning. We’ll see how long it takes to get to Ottawa from Colorado!

You even get free shipping when you order three. Until the end of the day today, BSE’s are 25% off, which means you get 3 full body skins for $17.97 with free international shipping. Can’t beat that deal.

@ Justin conceivably any screen protector for the original iPhone will work on any iPod Touch or iPhone…they all have the same 3.5″ screen.

I love this 2.0 phone. I was using an unlocked 1st gen, this is just way better. I also got the 6gb plan from Rogers, as well as the Mobile Me from Apple. Now all my emails come to the phone from all my email accounts.

I can really see lots of cool apps around the corner with the gps capability.

@ Penfield: Is there a way to disable the 3g data (considering you are not on a data plan) so that you don’t accidently surf the net via the rogers network instead of a wi-fi connection? Can anyone answer this for me?

Thinking about getting an iphone, but can’t justify the data plan right now…. so at least for the short term, was planning to go without data. but the thought of 5 cents/kb if i accidently use the rogers network doesnt sound pretty….

iPhone Fan

ntj: Yes, you can disable 3G data. There is a setting on the iPhone. You could also try calling Rogers to just cancel data on your account so you won’t get charged.

Hi folks,
just wanted to know, now that I purchased the 6GB data plan. Does this mean I can only get this data from Rogers hotspots? Honestly, how does this work? I know I get the 6GB/month for $30 but it would be great to know how the data comes across…

I was told by a CSR that if it’s at a place where it’s not “free”, then a window will pop up asking for credit card information to purchase wireless time. So, with this plan, where can I surf the internet without incurring extra charges?

if you turn on 3G on your iphone to save batteries, will data still work on EDGE?

I went and picked up my 8gb iPhone today.
Same place as you iPhone Fan (Tillicum in Victoria)
The guy who helped me was really awesome.
But my phone can’t connect to the data.
He was on the phone for like 2 hours.
But somehow he couldn’t figure it out…
So he said to go back tomorrow.
And if it still isn’t working they will get me a new one.

But besides that it is awesome lol

charliespuds: if you got 6GB data, you have internet anywhere on your phone. As for wifi…it’s only available from open hotspots or your wifi at home.

danny: Yeah, the guys at that location are super awesome. Very friendly, quick and knowledgeable. Looks like the phone is defective.

was wondering about data, everybody talks about how many youtube videos you can watch..but lets say i wanted to watch 30 minute tv shows….how much data would those take up??

I’m so happy haha.
It was the last one there…
I would have been so disappointed if it was defective lol.

Thanks IPHONEFAN… I take it that means I’m pretty much hooked up to the internet wherever I am and the “extra” costs don’t kick in until I’ve used up my 6GB? That makes sense…

Cheers…

Hi; Just wanted to say thanks for your blog. I’m learning with you guys. For the record: I am so happy with my iPhone you have no ideal. I’ve been waiting since 2 years or so for it. I’ve look into so much cell from all over, I even resist to the LG Prada that was out before the iphone… When you’ve been a Mac person all your life, this is more than a gift.
