Pwnage Tool Released – FAQ: What You Need to Know

Eureka! In about a week’s time the latest iPhone firmware 2.0 has been cracked and the Pwnage tool was released yesterday by the iPhone Dev Team. This is great news to people who are using first generation iPhones, iPod Touches, and the iPhone 3G. For all the people who aren’t hardcore iPhone users and have no clue what the heck the Pwnage tool is, I’m going to create the Coles Notes version of what this tool will do for YOU!

Pwnage Tool FAQ: Things You Need to Know

What does the Pwnage tool do?

  • The Pwnage tool will allow you to jailbreak and unlock your first generation iPhone after updating to the latest 2.0 firmware
  • The Pwnage tool will allow you to jailbreak but not unlock your iPhone 3G. Expect an unlock to come…soon?
  • The Pwnage tool will allow you to jailbreak and install firmware 2.0 on your iPod Touch (saves ya 10 bucks!)

What the F does “jailbreak” and “unlock” mean?

  • Jailbreak: in a nutshell this means to open up your iPhone/iPod Touch so you can install 3rd party applications. Read this for a blast to the past.
  • Unlock: this means you can use your iPhone with any GSM carrier, not just Rogers. Travellers love unlocked GSM phones because you can use local SIM cards and save big bucks on roaming charges.

Why should I use the Pwnage tool?

  • The latest iPhone firmware is 1.2.0, or know as firmware 2.0. This version has some new features that the previous 1.1.4 firmware does not have.
  • First generation iPhone users will be able to download and test out applications from the new iPhone App Store.
  • Personally, I find firmware 2.0 to be buggy and slow on my new iPhone 3G. After using my first gen iPhone on 1.1.4 firmware, I actually miss it. Super quick and responsive. I eagerly away a 2.1 or 2.2 update.
  • It sounds cool to tell your friends and family that you used the Pwnage Tool.
    • Teenager: “Hey Mom, I just used the Pwnage tool to update my iPhone to firmware 2.0!”
    • Mom: “That’s great–you deserve a medal. Now go clean your room!”

What are the current limitations of the Pwnage Tool?

  • It will NOT unlock your iPhone 3G.
  • It cannot free you of your 3 year Rogers iPhone 3G contract–nothing can (maybe the The Dark Knight?). You’re a sucker for paying almost $100/month for…err…wait a minute…that’s me…DOH!

Currently the Pwnage Tool is only available for Mac users. A Windows version will be out soon. I plan on using this tool to update my first generation iPhone to firmware 2.0. I’ll keep you guys updated. In the meantime, if you’re using a Mac and desperately want to update to firmware 2.0, check out this cool guide from our notorious iPhoneinCanada.ca member ruffdeezy.

For those that have updated, how did the process go for you?

I upgraded my iPhone and it went well. The process was easy, smooth and painless (unlike before when you would see all that scrolling cmd line stuff on your iPhone). I find 2.0 a bit faster than 1.x.

Overall, I’m pleased with 2.0 and Pwnage 2.0. Some people might miss Installer (it’s Cydia now) and it’s apps (they’re not compatible with 2.0), but I’m happy with it.

I am going to wait for the next couple of months to Pwn my iPhone 3G. There’s probably a new update around the corner from Apple anyways. Also I think there will be updates to the installer apps by then.

Hey guys, apparently after you unlocked with the latest pwnage tools, your edge would turn on and as a result fido/rogers would charge you should you use it for internet. I just realized it and have sent/receive about 200kb of data. I’m trying to find a way to turn it off.

Any reason why the Pwnage 2.0, may not be running on my Mac?

It opens, but it only shows the name of the software on the top corner of the screen, but nothing else happens.

    Thanks,

I don’t know if it’s possible to ask Fido or Rogers to completely deactivate edge on your account, but I found a way to deactivate edge under 2.0 – with Fido. It involves openSSH and browsing into var/preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist …

    OSX :
copy the file ‘preferences.plist’ on your hard drive. make a duplicate, just to keep original as a backup. open the duplicate in TextEdit. Find and erase ‘fido-core-appl1.apn’. Save and replace the ‘preferences.plist’ on your iphone with the one you just modified. It worked for me. Although Visual Voicemail didn’t work anymore (i guess VVM needs edge), i was sure no communication was going to be made outside Wifi. To reactivate, simply ‘reset network settings’, and Edge will go back to normal

    @Genesismultimedia
Pwnage 2.0.1 has just been released, supposedly it fixes the problem you mention, among others.

just ran it on my iPod Touch – worked like a charm! now. dead simple compared to previous jailbreak methods I had tried on both the Touch and original iPhone.

now, just waiting for apps to show up on Cydia or better yet installer.app to be supported…

Pwnage 2.0 worked great for me. I used it to upgrade my 1st gen iPhone. No problems so far, although (as iPhoneFan mentioned) the new firmware does seem a little slower than 1.1.4. There will most likely be an update from Apple in the near future.

If you download Pwnage Tool 2.0.1, you’ll get automatic updates from the iPhone Dev Team, to (hopefully) coincide with the updates from Apple.

I upgraded to 2.0 and unlocked with pwn 2.01 and though I don’t find a place to enable/disable EDGE like in firmware 1.1.4, when I am not connected to wi-fi, the iphone says that I am not suscribed to a data plan and so I cannot connect to EDGE network… I’ve monitored my sent/receive data all day and it hasn’t moved since…

I use windows and previously had a ziphoned 1st gen iPhone and I followed these steps: http://iphonecanadiana.blogspot.com/2008/07/updating-to-20.html
works perfectly, so far no crashes. I have found some neat free apps and will be staying with 2.0 until I find myself desperate for an msn chat app lol

I find 2.0 sluggish as hell. I often have to reboot because the software just stalls while sending a txt. I think I’m gonna wait on doing anything with this firmware, as it’s only going to be upgraded the moment the next upgrade comes out. Soon, I HOPE.

I’ve got an 1st generation iPhone running 2.0 firmware, Yahoo is supposed to offer free push email, but so far I haven’t got it to work. Visual voicemail doesn’t work for me either, perhaps because I’m on a pay as you plan with Rogers.

Has anyone heard when Installer.app 4.0 might be released? Haven’t really found much info on it, other than this:

    http://apple.qj.net/Nullriver-to-continue-development-of-Installer-app-new-info-on-version-4-0/pg/49/aid/122226

I hadn’t used Cydia before Pwnage 2.0, and I’m not really diggin it. Maybe because there’s not a lot of 3rd party stuff that runs on 1.2.0 yet.

Success on upgrading a 1st gen iPhone to 2.0 using Windows. Am missing the taskbar notify icons (for new mail, voicemail, etc) that I put on with Installer and I really liked them. If anyone know how to get them back, let me know. Have made the request to get VVM added, hopefully it works.

I pwnaged my first gen, but there’s no way to turn off the Data/Edge , is there? The phone is connecting to FIDO and there are some positive values in the data usage field ;-(.
I’d just like to use the device for wi-fi only; not Edge.

just pwnaged my 1st ten iPhone. Made a mistake by following the US instructions and temporarily bricked it but followed the pwnage instructions again and it finally worked. I find the new OS kind of slugish too but having the app store is cool.
