iPhone Coming to Canada in July to Rogers & Apple Resellers

I warned you this was going to happen–more iPhone speculation and rumors about the date when Canada will get the iPhone. According to an anonymous source that contacted me (that’s all I can say for now), the iPhone will be sold in July in Canada (or was it June?!), with availability coming from Apple Stores, Apple Resellers (E.G. Future Shop–my previous post), and Rogers Wireless locations.

As for pricing, monthly voice plans are supposed to be expensive ($69+) and–get ready…data will be $19.99/month, BUT capped at 1GB! Aside from the above information, that was all my source was able to inform me. We do know that Rogers is getting the iPhone–it’s a matter of when.

If the speculation above is true, that would equal a tremendous amount of places where you can buy the iPhone in Canada. We’re talking every single Rogers Wireless location and possibly even other Rogers outlets, such as Rogers Video. Don’t forget authorized Apple Resellers which includes giants like Future Shop, London Drugs (out West), Best Buy, and the handful of Apple Stores coast to coast (Vancouver’s first Apple Store is opening soon).

The part about plans at $69/month sound plausible, however a $19.99/month data plan capped at 1GB might cause a few riots in the streets around here. Although much cheaper than the $65/1GB plan, it would be a start in the right direction of seeing falling data rates (Canada has the world’s most expensive data rates–something we’re all very proud of–next to hockey, bacon, beavers, and maple syrup).

With so many different stories and rumors about when the iPhone will be sold in Canada, what’s your guess?

Well… With all the rumours it’s hard to say. The only thing we know for sure is that it will be out this year. Mind you this information came from the same person who got our hopes up with an April Fools joke (JK). I think we are all excited and anticipating the release, the main thing to keep in mind is after all this waiting, all our questions will be answered June 9. Meanwhile I’m typing this out on my unlocked iPhone so who am I to complain?

    -Cheers iPhone Fan

Based on this and info from a Gizmodo article today, things are hopefully looking more likely that Rogers is going to do the sensible thing and launch as early as they can. People will surely be confused and aghast if a near worldwide rollout occurs in the weeks following WWDC, and Rogers isn’t among them.

You say that a 1 GB cap on the data plan might cause a few riots on the streets. Respectfully, are you joking? :) Not just data plans but voice plans in Canada are shockingly high, especially when you add in features like call display and voicemail, and yet whenever I go out all I see are people talking on their cell phones. It seems to me that our response to outrageous cell phone charges is to lie down and say, “ooh, give me more of your huge plane rate, baby!” There are a few vocal protesters but the populace so far seems to be ignoring them.

Well another Rumour. First of all 1GB of data is a lot of data on a phone. If I used 5MB on EDGE of data that would be a lot on my phone. On my computer or even WIFI, different story. Second, I am on Windows Mobile for my iPhone and have unlimited browsing and downloading, then I can see what level I will use. I am hopeful that Rogers will have something similar for the iPhone. I suspect June 9 will be the date.

Does anyone know if Rogers will offer this plan to current iPhone users in Canada? I spoke to a Customer Service rep there and they said they would, but I am skeptical. I am paying $80 for 500GB, so $20 for 1GB is great and that is a lot of data on this device, as long as you aren’t watching Video all day. Will be interesting to see what they do about roaming data.

    Hey Bruce,

I totally agree with you, if you are an iphone user that won’t be streaming from YouTube, or using Google Maps, or even watching tv via slingbox. These are all things I do… So 1 gb cap is kind of unreasonable. I’d prefer to pay double that and get true unlimited. I hate being reined in with my devices.

I have to admit that I am constantly searching for the information that we all seek, and this site is by far the best. So when we are supposed to know, or not this is the place to find out.

    Also, what we do know.

We will be paying for the device, which one ?
The phone will likely cost $399.99 for a 8 gig, if it is still available. Possibly the 16 Gig for $399.99 and a 32 for $499.99. I hope with all of the applications coming out that we get a bigger phone. But be prepared for the states to only have it.

The biggest question for me is the contract and the price details, which none of us know. If some one claims that they are a rogers insider, prove it. Spill the beans. Capping the data, we WILL have to live with. Just wait for the penalty.

I cannot believe the rumors though on the hardware. Many of them have potential to be true. (I hope)

This site had a good run down.

    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/summary-what-we-know-about-iphone-2/

Now I have a quick question. I am not a previous smart phone owner, so please be gentle with me. When I take my future hopeful iPhone in the states, using a company cell that is Telus for voice. How is Rogers (Robbers) going to be gouging for roaming using data, SMS, checking email and the occasional surfing 3G. (Most times WiFi at the hotels).

Do any of you current iPhone owners have advice for what to look for in details for the data plan that doesn’t exist yet ?

Thanks for the answers, whom ever answers.

I don’t think you’ll find a better amalgamation of iPhone info that here at iphoneincanada, but the truth is that the info you’re looking for just isn’t available yet, and probably won’t be in any confirmed way until June 9th.

As for hardware, that too is up in the air. Whether the 8GB iPhone will disappear like the 4GB did is possible, but not certain. But if there is a new 32GB iPhone, it will not be restricted to the US- Apple doesn’t work that way. If the iPhone is available in Canada, then every iPhone will be available in Canada.

As for insiders spilling the beans, there are valuable poster here who have hinted at some details, but for me personally, knowing pricing details a couple weeks ahead of time isn’t worth someone possibly loosing their job. These people don’t have to post or say anything- so I value what they do say, when they say it. And not complain that they’re not telling me enough.

I’m not a currently Rogers customer, but from reading forums over the last couple of months, I do know that Rogers roaming charges are brutal- and I wouldn’t count on that changing…

Hey, no problem. Trust me, I’m a fanatic for iPhone news. I post here as often as anyone, and I don’t even own one yet! I’ll be so happy when I finally get mine- not just to get it, but also because I’ll probably get at least an hour a day back from reading news sites and forums.

Just like with anything, the buildup seem like it lasts forever. But June 9th isn’t that far away.

Of course, then I’ll just turn my attention to keeping an eye for news on the rumored MacBook Pro updates…

    Dude, it’s not worth it.

I am caught up in this iPhone rumor so much that my wife told me to stop and go to pacific mall in Toronto and just buy a hack.

It’s going to be worth the wait in the features of the phone and the rumored improvements.

The thing that is killing me is the wait for the data plan and contract. We all know that we are paying $399.99 ~ $499.99 for the device.

That is my deciding factor between getting the phone or the next gen iPod touch and just using WiFi.

J-Rock. there’s some info from the last day or so from someone specific to iphonincanada in the “iPhone confirmed in canada thread”. Basically expect voice and data plans priced from $59-$99 with a 3 year contract or renewal. But keep checking the forums here. Definitely the best source for info.

    Jay,

I know you only mean regarding cell phone service right? Hand guns, Health Care, IRAQ, Patriot Act, 3 unlikely candidates for President in an election campaign that goes on and on and on. I will pay more for my voice and data, even with Rogers and live to enjoy it.

Back to the phones, I love my iPhone, but I suspect that I will still want to keep it as is after it is released here because I am only paying $15/mo for lots of EDGE. Version 2.0 would likely be cool but if it is tied to too many conditions, I will keep what I have.

    Mr. 11th Indian and Bruce.

Canada is the best country in the world. The best people, beer and I am a proud Canadian soldier.

The lack of competition until the competition arises in Canada for cellular providers is what bothers me, and the rest of us pay for it. It has been stated before here, I am not going to repeat it how we currently get the shaft. But what other options do we have ?

I am willing to pay the $59.99 plan in Canada if it is similar to the AT&T with features and minutes.

As iPhoneFan stated, keep the rumors coming.

But what else are we going to rant about after the 9th of June ??

    iPhone V3 rumors ??

So yes it’s official, the iphone is comming July 11, and yes, it’s going to be alot cheaper than expected.
The real issue will now become what will rogers want to charge for there plans. I am super excited about getting the iphone, but I will not get it if the plans are rediculous. Let’s face it, for the iphone, unlimited data will be a requirement. And I am not paying 60 – 80 dollars a month for unlimited data. So I really hope they do a good job and do it cheap… If they do this, they will kill all other companies.
