Apple, AT&T Sell Out of iPhone 4; Ship Date Slips To July 2

Today marked the opening day for iPhone 4 preorders. Today also marked the day that Apple and AT&T sold out of the iPhone 4!

Reports have come in that indicate that AT&T (the exclusive carrier of the iPhone 4 in the USA) and various international partners (UK, Germany) have completely sold out of their iPhone 4 preorders, which means every single black 16/32GB iPhone 4 (white is not available yet).

As a result of this, the ship date has slipped to July 2, 2010 on Apple’s UK Online Store and likely soon to be reflected on Apple’s USA Online Store.

Engadget received a statement from AT&T confirming the sellout:

Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.

Is a similar fate coming to Canada? Will the iPhone 4 be pushed back to August 2010, like the iPad was pushed back one month?

I do hope it wouldn't mean we have to wait till August. At least the possibility of an unlock phone in Canada with a full priced iPhone 4 would balance out the potential wait one must endure in the coming month.

It may be if Apple has “under-estimated” the demand like they did with the iPad.

this definitely doesn't sound good……it doesnt look like a marketing strategy thing. i can see a production/supply issue right there. a delay to canada can be expected at this point…. hopefully, this is nothing to do with the foxconn suicide issue……. that makes me feel really bad.

overall, the unlocked iphone news makes me happy already. i am excepting an official unlock from carriers once signing up a contract.

I'd have to agree, “great marketing” first off how many iphone users are they, they all can't possibly allowed to do early upgrade. And ok lets take into account new users too, but lets be serious apple is a multi billion dollar machine. There goal is to make funds not delay product release. More hype, more people trying to get iphone 4 = more $$. Just my opinion, but i'll still be getting one 🙂

AT&T reported that pre-orders for the iPhone 4 outstripped the 3GS by a factor of 10… that should tell you something. 🙂

AT&T and Apple have sold 600,000 pre-order units. Sounds like a US only figure. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/600-000-ipho
