iOS 6.1.3 Update Will Likely Kill Evasi0n Jailbreak

The upcoming iOS 6.1.3 will likely put an end to Evasi0n jailbreak, Planetbeing said to Andy Greenberg of Forbes. His findings are the results of the testing with iOS 6.1.3 beta 2, which was found to patch at least one of the five bugs in the jailbreak exploits the hacker team used to create the latest jailbreak tool used to open up nearly 7 million devices in just four days after becoming available.

“If one of the vulnerabilities doesn’t work, evasi0n doesn’t work,” he says. “We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we’ve used when 6.1.3 comes out.”

However, this doesn’t mean Evasi0n’s time is up, Wang added. If Apple follows its usual schedule of releasing beta updates to users, it could take another month for the patch to become available to the public.

As Greenberg points out, Apple’s reply to the Evasi0n jailbreak was slower than usual, maybe because of the relatively low security risk the popular tool poses. Yet, as with each closed system that gets opened up, this tool could give ideas to criminals as well. However, the risk factor is much lower compared to any earlier jailbreak tool.

A recently discovered iOS security bug could give Apple another reason to push for an earlier release of iOS 6.1.3. But the cat and mouse game doesn’t end here. As Planetbeing already pointed out, the team already has enough exploits to hack the upcoming iOS 7, and as Wang says:

“If they patch most of the bugs,” Wang says, “Then we’re starting from scratch.”
