New Samsung Wallet App — Déjà Vu?
Samsung has unveiled its Wallet app during a developer conference at the Mobile World Congress on Wednesday. The app allows users to store things such as event tickets, boarding passes, membership cards, and coupons in one location. Do these features sound familiar?
Yes, that’s right. This is exactly what Apple’s Passbook app is designed to do. But there is more: The Samsung Wallet app also offers time- and location-based push notifications to notify users about their passes stored in their app. This is more than just a déjà-vu impression.
As The Verge points out, third-party developers can integrate the app, but this time Samsung has to grant access to this interaction. Passes saved within the app have a bar code which can be scanned at payment terminals.
And there is even more: During the company keynote, it became more than obvious that Apple’s Passbook app served as inspiration in terms of design as well. A quick look at the two apps’ icons confirms this.
Samsung Wallet is currently available for developers, who can download the SDK and API guides for it, and the app is scheduled to be available in Samsung’s app store in the near future, as the South Korean manufacturer will partner up with Walgreens, Belly, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Lufthansa at launch.

Every mobile OS has a wallet app. Some have multiple wallet apps. Some actually function as a wallet and not just a coupon or ticket vault. This article makes it seem as if Apple invented the wallet app and eveything else is a copy. They didn’t. Apple is just amazing at marketing things to people who can’t read between the lines.
The difference is Apple used it as a selling point and now Samsung has also decided to use theirs as a selling point — not to mention the similarities in the icon design. This isn’t anything new in Samsungs “innovation”
They never really innovate anyway, so this should of be surprising. What is a bit shocking is that they even copied its look. Sure there are other wallet applications, maybe they should of copied those. NFC is a security issue waiting to happen, and it some cases it has, its permission access leaves big holes in Android (the most unsecured version of linux to date).

Not really. It’s not suggesting Apple created wallet apps, but more so suggesting that Samsung’s version is basically the same as Apple’s.
And, you might be right, Apple is amazing at doing that. But understand that there are people who can`t, nor do they want to learn to read between the lines. Apple`s products ARE designed with that in mind. Keeping things simple and easy to understand, so that people of all ages and backgrounds can use their products. The amount of money they make is prove that many of these people exists. At the end of the day, Apple is a business, and businesses needs to make profits. Good for Apple for being successful at doing just that.
The only thing I learnt from this article, besides the obvious copy to Apple’s Passbook icon, is the fact that Samsung realizes as well that NFC hasn’t really picked up. Apple saw this and that’s why they haven’t incorporated such technology on the iPhone. Merchants are also not too convince NFC is the solution for mobile payments yet, thus the lack of adoption and usability from consumers.
Let’s hope those people that laughed and talked smack about the iPhone 5, when Apple announced that it will not have NFC, realized this as well.
