Unlike the iPhone 5, the newest flagship iPhone 5s announced today by Apple will not be available for pre-order, unlike the iPhone 5c, where pre-orders commence on September 13, as noted on Apple’s website:
These availability and pre-order dates have also been echoed by Rogers/Fido, TELUS, and Bell/Virgin Mobile. So if you want the iPhone 5s at launch, you’ll need to line up at a store or order it starting on September 20, which gives Apple a ten day head start to begin churning out as many units as possible, considering China was added to the initial launch wave.
The lack of pre-orders for the iPhone 5s most likely are a sign of supply constraints of the newer components, such as the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, A7 chip, and new colour options of silver, gold and space grey; the iPhone 5c uses most of its parts from the now-retired iPhone 5.

So get a 5, not like they dissappeared off the face of the earth, plus its cheaper now! If youre getting upgrades for 5S, go to futureshop/bestbuy at opening, i walked in for iphone 5 in Downtown montreal at 9am and there was no one. Apple store was 8 hour wait! and i doubt there will be the same demand for the 5s since everyone used their upgrades for the 5 and there’s not that much difference between 5 and 5s for ppl to pay full price

It’s never been an issue for me, walking into a store in a small town on launch day and picking one up. Little to no wait.
Me neither. If I go and buy unlocked there’s little to no wait. The lines are mostly for those who buy with contracts.
In Vancouver, the line up is huge. You would have thought the phones are for free to have so many people lining up to buy unlocked iPhones.
In fact, they are the Chinese suppliers buying the phones and selling them back in Hong Kong and other part of Asia. Asian people love unlocked iPhones. Buyers pay up to $1k just to get their hands on one first.
Rest assured. If you are purchasing unlocked at retail, you’ll be in and out within 10 minutes. There are always two lines. Contract and unlocked.
Except they didn’t sell unlocked at retail for the 5 launch last year and if the wording on their web page is correct, they won’t be again this year.
Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself. I have a feeling…it might.

Rep at southgate apple store told me today that they will be selling unlocked at retail day 1 at this point. They may be told otherwise by the 20th so call your store the night before just in case!
Last year had i5 pre orders. None this year. Let’s hope that lack of pre order means day one unlocked!
