Despite the Daimler CEO’s amazement at how much Apple has progressed with its electric car project, company executives are unhappy with the progress, a “previously reliable source with knowledge of the team’s activities” has told AppleInsider.

Apple has allegedly placed a hiring freeze on the Project Titan team after the post-holiday progress review resulted in results that left the design chief Jony Ive displeased with headway made by the group.

The whispers follow an earlier report that Steve Zadesky, who was believed to be the head of Apple’s Project Titan project, is leaving the company due to “personal reasons”. At this point it is unclear whether his departure has anything to do with the hiring freeze.

Rumour has it Apple has a team of more than 1,000 employees working on the electric car, both at Cupertino and in other labs. You may recall the flood of reports on Apple’s vehicle-related hirings, which even included poaching talent from Tesla.

If we are to believe Bloomberg’s sources, the Apple Car should be ready by 2020, but long-time car industry execs have already warned that Apple may run into issues while developing the vehicle. A September report from AppleInsider claims that manufacturing issues had emerged, and that the company was seeking to partner with an established carmaker.
