Apple Updates 12″ MacBook: New Intel Processors, Longer Battery Life, Rose Gold

Macbook

Apple today announced that it has updated the 12-inch MacBook with the latest Intel processors (Skylake dual-core Intel Core M), with up to 25% faster graphics performance, faster flash storage, additional battery life and a new rose gold finish.

This year’s MacBook features a sixth-generation dual-core Intel Core M processor up to 1.3 GHz, with speeds up to 3.1 GHz; and faster, 1866 MHz memory. The ultra-thin laptop features a USB-C port, the same all-metal unibody enclosure, and Force Touch trackpad, and weighs just 2 pounds. Also, Apple today made 8 GB of memory standard across all configurations of the 13-inch MacBook Air.

“MacBook is the thinnest and lightest Mac we have ever made and it’s our vision for the future of the notebook,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are going to love this update to MacBook, with the latest processors, faster graphics, faster flash storage, longer battery life and a beautiful rose gold finish.”

The updated MacBook is available today in gold, silver, space grey, and, for the first time on a Mac, a gorgeous rose-gold, starting at $1,549 (CAD) for the 1.1 GHz dual-core Intel Core m3 processor version, and $1,899 (CAD) for the 1.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core m5 processor version. Configure-to-order options include a 1.3 GHz dual-core Intel Core m7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.1 GHz.

Refurbs are starting at 1189, almost a solid 400 reduction.

Thanks. Refurb is now $170 cheaper now compared to when it first debuted in January. Compared to new, definitely some decent savings here

Wouldn’t the 2015 1.3GHz model (1409$ refurb) be a better overall performer than the base 2016 1.1 GHz model (1549$)? I’m looking to replace my 2013 11″ MBA (base model 4GB/128GB), mainly for the Retina screen.

Apparently the new 1.1GHz model is slightly faster than the 1.3GHz 2015 model. Slightly.

Interesting. I’ll keep looking at the benchmarks. Waiting for my tax return to pull the trigger anyway.

I ended up grabbing a base model 2016 (1.1/8/256) tonight. Fits in my 2013 11″ MBA’s sleeve and I really like it so far. Screen is a huge upgrade from the MBA, keyboard isn’t a problem, performance looks similar. I’ll see how it behaves with dev tools running but so far so good.

It IS expensive though.

I absolutely love the form factor and display. After dabbling with the 1.1 GHz model I decided to return it and order the 1.3 GHz model, however. The 1.1 wasn’t slow but I figured the 1.3 would future proof the purchase.

István, would you recommend that someone who uses an iPad as their main mobile computer owns a laptop or a desktop computer at home? I want to still have access to the full operating system, I just don’t need it with me all the time, a la the Air or MBRetina.
So basically, in your opinion, a Macbook Pro or iMac/Hackintosh for home (mostly desk) use?

I would recommend a MacBook for casual users, but as you know it depends on the purpose of the device and budget.
