App Store Features ‘Mobile Banking’ Apps Ahead of Full Apple Pay Rollout

Apple Pay expanded to Visa, MasterCard and Interac last week with support coming from CIBC and RBC. Other banks such as TD, Scotiabank and BMO are set to follow in mid-June.

Ahead of full-on Canadian bank support for Apple Pay, a new section in the App Store highlights mobile banking apps from the mobile wallet’s partners.

The first four apps coming into view are CIBC, RBC Mobile, ATB Mobile and American Express, existing Apple Pay partners. Further back, we see TD, Scotiabank and BMO, which are set to support Apple Pay later next month. Looks like the late supporters don’t get front page treatment like the first group of banks.

According to early results from our unscientific poll, nearly 62 percent of you are enjoying Apple Pay, while 35 percent are still waiting for support from TD, Scotiabank and BMO, based out of 250 votes. We expect this poll to show even higher satisfaction results once all ‘Big 5’ banks support Apple Pay at the same time, and will re-visit next month.

Wait what? I thought the Apple Pay works within the app Wallet. Why do we need individual apps for each bank ?

Yes it does, but this is Apple’s way of promoting the apps from these banks, free press.

You would want the individual app(s) for your bank(s) to see your balance, make transfer and other banking needs. Apple Pay is just to pay at the POS terminals in the supporting stores.
