iPhone 8 Facial Recognition Tech to Work “in the Millionths of a Second”: Report

Rumours suggest Apple is reportedly having trouble getting Touch ID to work underneath a glass screen and instead might use facial recognition on iPhone 8.

According to a new report from the Korea Herald,  the highly anticipated iPhone 8 will feature facial recognition technology that will work “in the millionths of a second.”

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel is believed to cover the eagerly anticipated device’s entire front, eliminating the space for the physical home button that doubles up as a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

“The new facial recognition scanner with 3-D sensors can deeply sense a user’s face in the millionths of a second,” reads the report. “Also, 3-D sensors are said to be adopted for the front and rear of the device to realize AR applications, which integrate 3-D virtual images with user’s environment in real time.”

No source is given for the information, but considering the source is a Korean publication and the fact that Samsung is making the displays, one can make an educated guess on where it comes from. While it’s not believed that Samsung is making the facial recognition system itself, the company may well have information on the complete display assembly.

The report also suggests that Apple is not planning to use a curved display. This does not mean that the glass covering the display will not curve over to the edges — to help with the phone’s ergonomics — but the screen itself should remain flat, with minimal bezels on either side.

“Apple is highly unlikely to follow the same design of its rival’s. Instead of the curved edge display, it will have a flat screen with bezel-less on the top and bottom alongside the two sides,” a source familiar with the matter told the Korea Herald.

The latest claimed leaks of iPhone 8 parts show the display assembly, complete with notch for the cameras and sensors.
