2021 MacBook Pro to Save Reddit Engineering Team $100,000 in Productivity
At its ‘Unleashed’ event last month, Apple unveiled new 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models powered by next-generation M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.
Reviews and benchmarks have quickly cemented the new MacBook Pros as the next frontier in professional workflows, with The Verge minting them “the most powerful laptops” they’ve ever seen.
Both the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips deliver up to 70% faster CPU performance than last year’s M1. As for graphics processing, the M1 Pro promises twice the performance of the base M1 chip, and the M1 Max boasts a whopping 4x boost. But how does that translate to real-world application and development workflows?
Jameson Williams (@softwarejameson), a Staff Engineer at Reddit and former Amazon Web Services engineer, and his team have discovered that the new 2021 MacBook Pro models have the potential to cut down their Android development times by half.
“For a team of 9, $32k of laptops will actually save $100k in productivity over 2022,” Jameson said in a tweet.
We recently found that the new 2021 M1 MacBooks cut our Android build times in half.
So for a team of 9, $32k of laptops will actually save $100k in productivity over 2022. The break-even point happens at 3 months.
TL;DR Engineering hours are much more expensive than laptops!

For a team of developers that work on a lot of code for Android, an investment in Apple’s newest MacBook Pros offers a handsome return in just one year of use. In a span of just three months, the notebooks will have paid for themselves.
Williams says he will be documenting a full breakdown of how the new MacBook Pros will be saving the Reddit engineering team time and money soon, in a blog post.
When it comes to laptops for professional and creative workflows over the next year, it is absolutely the new MacBook Pro models’ race to lose. Even iFixit, during its teardown of the new notebooks, said that they haven’t seen comparable performance from any laptop currently on the market.
