Apple has officially discontinued the 27-inch LG UltraFine 5K Display, which launched way back in late 2016, in Canada and the U.S. (via Reddit).
The external display is no longer available to purchase on Apple.ca, and it is also listed as Discontinued on the official LG website.
The 27-inch IPS LED monitor was designed for creators and enjoyed its fair share of time in the spotlight, winning the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA)’s Best Photo Monitor award in 2017.
What’s interesting is that Apple removed the external monitor from its online stores on Friday, days after the ‘Peek Performance’ event where it unveiled what is destined to be its successor — the 27-inch 5K Studio Display. Usually, Apple discontinues a product as soon as it announces its replacement.
Apple’s new Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K Retina screen with over 14.7 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness, P3 wide colour, and True Tone technology, a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera with Center Stage, a high-fidelity six-speaker sound system with spatial audio, and an A13 Bionic chip under the hood to drive it all.
As for pricing, the new Studio Display starts at $1,999 CAD while the LG UltraFine 5K Display launched at $1,699.95 CAD.
The all-new 2022 Studio Display is available to order now in Canada at Apple.ca and in the Apple Store app. It will begin shipping to customers and arriving in select Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Resellers by Friday, March 18.
The LG UltraFine 4K Display, a lower-end variant of the LG UltraFine 5K Display, is still available to purchase at Apple.ca. The tech giant is reportedly also developing a ‘Studio Display Pro,’ with a mini-LED screen and ProMotion technology, for a possible June release.
