Major Refresh to Sonos App Reported to Arrive Next Month

Sonos is reportedly planning a major overhaul of its mobile app this spring. Expected to arrive on iOS and Android on May 7th, the app refresh is said to simplify the process of setting up new devices as well as strengthen the connectivity between speakers.

The app refresh is supposedly due to rollout as an update to the Sonos S2 app, according to The Verge. In the report, it’s said that the update will remove the bottom navigation tabs in exchange for having all major options centralized on one home screen.

The Sonos app home screen refresh is reported to also offer a scrollable carousel of playlists and available music streaming services. It’s claimed that this assortment of options is customizable based on user preferences as users can reorder and add their favourite playlists to the home screen.

Quality of life improvements expected include a persistent search bar which may appear on the bottom of the app. This will be the designation in which users can search and discover music. The ‘Now Playing’ screen is said to soon include the shuffle and repeat buttons. The new Sonos app is also expected to have an accessible volume slider available no matter which menu you’re in.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg broke the story that Sonos may be developing an app refresh to coincide with its reported headphones. Under the codename ‘Passport,’ the Sonos app refresh is believed to lay the foundation needed to integrate its first wireless headphones into the ecosystem.

Last year, CEO Patrick Spence teased that Sonos was preparing for a multiyear product cycle in 2024. While not outright announcing its launch plans of a pair of wireless headphones, the new product has been widely believed to be in the works and will launch this year. Supposedly, the over-the-ear audio solution was expected to be released during the spring but was delayed due to a software issue. Reports now claim that the headphones could launch in June and run users $449 USD (around $614 CAD).
