SaskTel, along with Samsung Canada, and Innovation Saskatchewan announced the launch of the province’s first 5G Innovation Labs on Tuesday.

Called the SaskTel 5G Innovation Lab, these facilities aim to provide local businesses, university students, researchers, and innovators with resources to fully utilize 5G technology and create solutions for communication and connectivity in Saskatchewan. Of course, the lab is powered by Samsung.

“There are significant economic opportunities and social benefits that advanced communications networks and technologies can deliver to people in communities across our province,” said Jeremy Harrison, Minister Responsible for Innovation Saskatchewan, in an issued statement.

The 5G Innovation Labs are located at the Collider co-working spaces in Saskatoon and Regina, within the Innovation Place research and technology parks, a prime location near post-secondary institutions, a robust research community, and growing tech companies. There’s also flexible accommodation available for short and long-term use at the location.

“This collaboration between industry and government shows the province’s commitment to ensuring the competitiveness of our tech sector and expanding opportunities through our evolving innovation corridor,” said Kari Harvey, CEO of Innovation Saskatchewan, in a statement.

Samsung is the primary wireless solutions provider for SaskTel, is supplying the latest 4G and 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core solutions to the Innovation Lab.

The significance of 5G Labs for Canadian companies lies in their ability to facilitate vast data transfer, creating secure, clean, and faster networks for product testing and research. Core industries in Saskatchewan, such as agriculture, mining, and healthcare, along with IoT companies, stand to benefit from the advanced 5G network.

SaskTel recently announced its 5G network upgrade has reached its halfway point, with over 520 cell sites now covering 85% of the population in the province.
