Netflix Basic Plan Officially Dead in Canada for Existing Subscribers

Netflix is holding true to its word that its Basic streaming plan will be disappearing forever.

Back in June 2023, Netflix quietly axed its Basic $9.99/month streaming plan in Canada, forcing new subscribers to jump on its $5.99/month plan with ads. Netflix has previously said that its new ads-supported plan was gaining in popularity.

In January of this year, Netflix confirmed the Basic plan in Canada would be removed entirely, even for existing subscribers. Meaning, those on Basic plans would soon see their plan axed and they would have to jump to the ads plan, or a more expensive Standard or Premium plan at $16.49 and $20.99 per month, respectively.

Now, as spotted by The Verge, Netflix customers on Reddit are saying they are now being forced to pick a new plan, with some noting the date as June 8, 2024. One Reddit user said their grandfathered Basic plan in Canada was set to die in June.

So while it seems Netflix has given customers plenty of notice that the Basic plan was coming to end, it is finally happening for existing users. Have you been told by Netflix that your Basic plan is no longer available?
