Apple Maps on the Web (Beta) Now Available

apple maps web beta

Apple has launched a public beta of Apple Maps on the web, making it accessible to users worldwide through their browsers.

With this new feature, users can now obtain driving and walking directions, find various places and detailed information including photos, hours, ratings, and reviews. Users can also perform actions like ordering food directly from the Maps place card and explore curated Guides to find dining, shopping, and entertainment options in cities globally. You can toggle the map between standard, hybrid and satellite views.

Additional functionalities, such as Look Around, are expected to be introduced in the coming months. Developers, including those utilizing MapKit JS, can link to Maps on the web, enabling their users to access driving directions and detailed place information. The Look Around feature is not available yet and is coming soon.

Currently, Apple Maps on the web is available in English and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple plans to expand support for more languages, browsers, and platforms in the future.

For fans of Apple Maps, this expansion to the web is a nice touch. But for now, Google Maps still reigns supreme as you get more details on traffic, transit direction, and more. A quick test of Apple Maps on the web didn’t even turn up a local business in our area, whereas Google Maps had it located without issue. Who’s going to use this?

Meh. Apple is well aware their users (and many others) prefer esthetics over functionality. While the map is "pretty" to look at, it will never, I repeat never match Google Maps because GM is continuously being updated not just by Google but users as well.

I don’t see the point. Apple device owners don’t really need it as they already have the app on their devices. It may be mildly interesting for non Apple users but they are probably already fine with the Google Maps, be it on the web or with the app. Who is their target audience?

You've never done your research ahead of heading out, before sending it to your phone?
And that's just one example.

Well, no. I can’t say I haven’t done research beforehand but I don’t remember ever sending it to my phone. I usually use my phone and cell data when I need the information in real time. There were few occasions when I anticipated I won’t have reception where I was going and downloaded the maps of the area for offline use but that was directly to the device that I would take with me and using the apps not the web interface.

This is just one example. I tend to use maps.google.com instead of reaching for my phone all the time.
